Subsea Monitoring of Suspended Wells

Tildelt: kr 99 999

Statoil, Shell and PSA launched in Feb. 2015 an initiative to promote industry co-operation for qualification and testing of improved Plugging & Abandonment (P&A) solutions. The challenge is based on a multitude of wells to be P&A'd over the next 3-5 years, in addition to the already 282 temporarily abandoned wells on the NCS. The current proposal is directly addressing the challenge of monitoring subsea wells which are disconnected from the production control system. Statoil has defined the goal as "establish a cheap and easily installed solution for "real time" monitoring at shore of subsea wells disconnected from the production control system. (...) on-shore read out is required. One data set from the well per day is sufficient". Biota Guard has already developed a unique real-time environmental monitoring system, combining advanced analytics and data management with the use of biosensors and chemical and physical sensors. By leveraging the company's multi-sensor approach and strong knowledge of subsea communication solutions, Biota Guard is convinced that an adjusted version of the system will be perfectly fit for P&A monitoring. The bio-sensor component is however omitted to make the stand-alone "Biota Guard Well Unit" fit for purpose. A patent has been filed related to the method for obtaining data, using a series of principles to translate data points into pressure readings at new and old wellheads with different configurations. Additional innovations are found in the way subsea communication infrastructure is organized. The current state-of-the art is represented by Inspection Maintenance and Repair vessels with ROV to physically hook up to the well every 3-6 months. The current monitoring practice is however not economically scalable or practicable to meet the desired one reading per day. Statoil and Shell are the main prospects to support a main project, together with Total, ENI, Wintershall and CoP. The proposal is linked to the Demo2000 theme #1.
