Project Description: Nordic Drama and Theatre for the Forthcoming 3rd Edition of the Chinese Encyclopedia By Chengzhou He Summary: In December 2014, I was appointed the editor-in-chief of the Nordic Drama and Theatre for the 3rd Edition of the Chinese Encyclopedia, which is one of the largest encyclopedias in the world. In 2002, I got my PhD on Ibsen after five-year study at the Center for Ibsen Studies, University of Oslo. Since then, I have been teaching at Nanjing U, China, doing research on Ibsen, Knut Hamsun and other Norwegian and Scandinavian authors. But, I have not done thorough research on the Nordic Drama and Theatre as a whole. In fact, there is very little material on Nordic Drama and Theatre in Chinese except Ibsen and Strindberg. In order to do my editorial job well, I need to spend some time in Oslo this summer to collect research material, consult with Norwegian scholars, and visit some research institutions in Norway and other Scandinavian countries. My research plan during my trip in Oslo is as follows: First, I need to decide on which Norwegian and other Scandinavian playwrights, directors and other important theatre events should be included in the new edition of the Chinese Encyclopedia. Second, since there is little research material on Nordic Drama and Theatre in Chinese language, I hope that I can use my stay in Oslo to collect much-needed material for my research. Third, concerning some theatre events in the history of Scandinavian drama and theatre, I need to do research into some archives in different locations in Norway and other Nordic countries. Fourth, I need to do some on-spot research visits of some theatre and festivals in Norway and other Nordic countries so that I can have some first-hand material for my writings. Finally, I will take the opportunity to collect research material for my Ibsen studies, as Ibsen will definitely be the most important dramatist in the Nordic Drama and Theatre for the new Chinese encyclopedia.
