Capturing the debate at COP21: The role of CCS in our low carbon future

Tildelt: kr 0,24 mill.

The IPCC's AR5 drew some sobering conclusions for those working to limit dangerous climate change. As global emissions increase at a rate far outstripping the pace of uptake of measures to reduce them, technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and the ability to remove CO2 from the atmosphere become ever more critical in preventing a climate catastrophe. What is more, the exclusion of CCS from the climate mitigation portfolio could result in mitigation costs more than doubling. However, these messages have not permeated through civil society to sufficiently reinvigorate the dialogue around CCS and carbon negative solutions. To add to this, Bellona is observing that CCS is transitioning through a number of time critical decision gates, which include defining the role of carbon negative emissions, the urgent need to develop CO2 storage capacity and the wider decarbonisation of European and global economies post-2030. Global leaders, industry and civil society groups must be made aware that these actions are necessary and require urgent attention. Bellona intends to bring these themes to the forefront of the widest possible audience at COP21 in Paris this year. Through education and drawing attention to the scale of the decarbonisation challenge outlined in the IPCC's AR5 Bellona will champion the need for CCS from a civil society perspective. Bellona will host four side events at COP21 concentrating on the rationale for CCS and carbon negative solutions. Bellona will leverage the experience of world leading researchers, activists, industrialists and legislators to form and communicate the message that CCS will be required to decarbonise industry, carbon negative emissions will be required to meet the 2oC target, and the development of geological CO2 storage is instrumental in fostering CCS deployment and in achieving a low carbon economy in the rapidly shrinking window of action.
