Computer aided diagnostics and treatment planning in cardiovascular disease

Tildelt: kr 0,50 mill.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of morbidity and death in the western hemisphere and the expenses is expected to increase almost exponentially towards 2030. It will be crucial to develop cost-effective methods of diagnosing and preventing progression of disease causing heart failure and needs for frequent hospitalizations and expensive treatment. The aim of the CardioSIM project is to develop a novel platform for diagnosing and treatment planning of CVD based on computational simulation models of the individual patient. This will allow for individualized treatment specific to the patient's' phenotype and will result in better therapeutic results and outcome. Importantly, we will also get to know which patients will not benefit from expensive and potentially harmful treatment. Simulating biological systems are challenging due to its complexity. Though a number of groups worldwide have worked on the topic of simulating CVD the last 10-15 years, it has not been implemented in the clinical routine so far. We strongly believe that our medical-technical consortium is unique and capable of solving the challenges and bring simulation based decision support into clinical testing. Our CardioSIM ICT-platform will facilitate sharing of information among the clinical staff prior to surgery and will, in addition, provide the patients with relevant information of their diseases and treatment options allowing for knowledge based user involvement. An interdisciplinary approach is essential for the development towards personalized therapy in CVD. Our medical-technical consortium aims to combine the different fields of research into one integrated project and take a leading role internationally in catalyzing change in how CVD is understood, diagnosed and treated.
