Hjort Summer School 2016

Alternativ tittel: Hjort PhD sommerskole 2016

Tildelt: kr 0,15 mill.

The Hjort Centre was founded in 2014 as a collaboration between the Institute of Marine Research, the University of Bergen, Uni-research and the Nansen Centre. Not by coincident, 2014 also marks the 100 - year anniversary of Johan Hjort's seminal book 'Fluctuations in the Great Fisheries of Northern Europe'. Hjort is widely considered the founder of modern fisheries science and in his spirit the Hjort Centre is dedicated to examine and understand the underlying causes of fluctuations in harvested species. As part of the activities at the Centre, the aim is to organize an annual summer school. Each summer school will have a slightly different topic, but always related to the overarching goal of the Hjort Centre; e.g. the theme of the Hjort Summer School of 2015 was 'Fishing and physics as drivers of marine ecosystem dynamics'. The summer school aims to cater to both domestic and international PhD students, primarily, with lecturers from Norway as well as internationally renowned scientists. The summer school will be organized as a mix of lectures, student presentations, practical field work and discussions. Date and venue Each Hjort Summer School will be held at the Espegrend Research Facility outside Bergen. The Summer School will take place over a period of 5 days in late August/early September 2016. The goal is to have approximately 30 student participants and approximately 10 lecturers.
