Arne Næss Chair in Global Justice and the Environment is designed to critically continue and develop the intellectual legacy of Arne Næss. The Chair is awarded to international scholars who promote cutting edge insights into research on development and the environment and who explore burning issues related to the environmental crisis, social and environmental responsibility, social justice, climate challenge, as well as environmental philosophy and ethics. Arne Næss Professors are invited to spend 3 months in Oslo and work on their project in a dialogue with Norwegian researchers. The high point of the Arne Næss Chair is the annual Arne Næss Symposium - featuring Arne Næss lecture and the session with the young international researchers, who present their vision of a better, more sustainable world. In the last 7 years the Arne Næss Chair has been established as a "visiting card" for the University of Oslo in promoting research on the environment. To ensure the wide dissemination of the debate, the Symposium is transmitted by NRK2 (kunnskapskanalen)and has a broad media coverage in the national press. The theme of the 2016 Arne Næss Symposium is "Imagining Ecomodernity", and its aim is to holistically explore new, ecological modes of governance, social movements, health services, food production, culture and the arts, which are part of the emerging green commons. The Symposium will invite innovative thinkers from all these fields to imagine a world of ecomodernity. Dr Edurado Gydynas (Uruguay) - the 2016 Arne Næss Professor in Global Justice and the Environment is one of the most influential an creative environmental thinkers in Latin America and the author of many books and articles on global justice and the environment. He is best known for his work on the value platform of the Buen Vivir movement: a broad social vision and mobilization which focuses on the 'good life' and explores alternatives to mainstream scenarios of industrial development and growth.
