The project will demonstrate the technological feasibility to achieve > 50% accumulated recovery of the Ta content in in-going WEEE scrap in 2 separate processing plants, by simultaneous development of physical separation methods to concentrate Ta for further processing, hydro-metallurgical upgrading techniques to separate Ta in micro-capacitors from its casing to produce high purity oxide (Ta2O5), and environmentally benign and energy efficient pyro-metallurgical reduction techniques to produce Ta metal or Ta oxycarbide. The project will establis standard methods for reliably determining different critical element contents in different types of WEEE waste material streams in a range of matrices and concentrations, as well as collect and provide input on Ta-content and recovery yields to all investigated process steps to evaluate economic and life-cycle optimization of the integrated value chain. TANTRA will establish at least 2 business scenarios with associated business opportunities for corporate project partners based on the developed extraction/recovery routes through evaluation and comparison of technical, economic and environmental feasibility of the sub-processes and the value chain(s) and benchmark towards existing technologies and value chains. Based on the ecologic-economic-technologic (EET) evaluation, we will demonstrate the economic value of the tuned integral chain(s), through pilot scale demonstrations. Evaluation of existing business models will be conducted, as part of market uptake development for the TANTRA technologies, over the different process steps. The project will disseminate results to support further uptake in other scientific and technology domains.
