Den geopolitiske situasjonen i Europa endret seg dramatisk med Russlands invasjon av Ukraina, og forårsaket umiddelbart bekymring for sikkerheten til europeisk energiinfrastruktur. Etter sabotasjen mot Nord Stream-rørledningene og observasjoner av uidentifiserte droner rundt norske olje- og gassinstallasjoner til havs, har det blitt et mål å sikre sikkerheten til petroleumsinfrastruktur. En rekke internasjonale, statlige og bedriftsaktører må nå samarbeide for å koordinere innsatsen for å sikre kritisk petroleumsinfrastruktur.

Koordinering og samarbeid mellom vidt forskjellige aktører rundt felles problemer viser seg ofte å være utfordrende. INTERSECT utforsker hvordan det institusjonelle miljøet rundt petroleumsinfrastrukturen kan samarbeide om sikkerhetsstyring. Til grunn for prosjektet ligger antakelsen om at tilstrekkelig sikkerhetsstyring må omfatte flere styringsnivå og en rekke aktører. INTERSECT analyserer utfordringer og muligheter for sikkerhetsstyring mellom flere analysenivå; internasjonalt nivå, nasjonalt nivå, og sektor- og industrinivå. Prosjektet vil her studere samspillet og samarbeidet mellom aktører på ulike nivå, inkludert NATO, norske statlige institusjoner, tilsynsmyndigheter og petroleumsselskaper. Fokus vil ligge på å identifisere og overvinne samarbeidsbarrierer.

Staten er ansvarlig for nasjonal sikkerhet, men selskaper eier petroleumsinfrastrukturen. Ved analyse av industrinivået er bedriftsinterne forhold og tilpasningsevne sentralt. Petroleumsselskapene er rettet mot sikkerhet (safety), ikke først og fremst sikring (security), og de nye omstendighetene tvinger selskapene til å rette mer oppmerksomhet mot "security". INTERSECT utforsker bedriftsinterne løsninger i samarbeid med nøkkelbedrifter i norsk sektor, og analyserer også bedrifters roller i sikkerhetspolitikken kritisk.

INTERSECT er et tverrfaglig samfunnsvitenskapelig prosjekt som bygger på disiplinene statsvitenskap, organisasjonssosiologi og samfunnssikkerhet.

The geopolitical situation following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has put a premium on the security of petroleum infrastructures. The changed geopolitical context represents a sudden and significant shift in the framework conditions for the petroleum sector's risk governance model. The shift involves 1) a more influential international dimension in the petroleum sector’s risk governance, and 2) changes in the intersections between safety and security, at different societal levels. These shifts, and how to deal with them, are the points of departure for INTERSECT.

The stronger international dimension involves a new regulatory and supervisory landscape where state security regulations (the Security Act) enter a field where risk governance has traditionally been based on strong sectoral-industrial risk regulation. The new geopolitical situation, and the corresponding changes in the regulatory framework conditions, challenge the sector’s institutional logic and the division of labour between safety and security regulators and supervisory agencies. Changes in power structures, roles and responsibilities emerge, and trigger a need for coordination and collaboration to be able to align matters of safety and security into comprehensive risk governance. The changes also challenge companies’ structures, cultures and practices for risk management.

INTERSECT responds to an industrial and societal need to detect and understand the conditions for constructing adequate security risk governance around petroleum infrastructure. Assuming that adequate security governance must be multi-level and multi-actor, INTERSECT studies coordination and collaboration between actors at different governance levels, from the international, through the state to the company level. INTERSECT explores challenges and opportunities for security governance, seeking to identify and overcome collaborative barriers, including the alignment and collaboration between safety and security professionals.

New geopolitics and the interaction between safety and security in petroleum risk governance

Geostyring, dvs. evnen til å finjustere brønnposisjonering i sanntid, øker brønnverdien og reduserer risiko. Geostyring er avgjørende for petroleumsbrønner, og aktuelt for andre operasjoner som geotermiske prosjekter, horisontalboring av brønner og tunneler, samt CO2-lagringsbrønner. Nåværende geostyringsbeslutninger bygger på rask manuell tolkning av sanntidsdata med hensyn til modeller, geologi og tilknyttet usikkerhet. Men, ifølge Rassenfoss (2022, SPE JPT) har personen ansvarlig for geostyring svært begrenset tid til å tolke innkommende data, langt mindre å vurdere usikkerheten.
 
Avanserte ensemble-metoder er kjernen i lukket-løkke reservoarstyring (EnCLRM), den nye standarden for automatisk optimalisering av petroleumsfelt under usikkerheten. EnCLRM er dessverre ikke rask nok for geostyring i sanntidsoperasjoner pga. kompleksiteten i geomodellering. Dette kan løses med nye generativt nettverks (GN) geomodeller som "lærer geologi" før boreoperasjon og har ytelse på under ett sekund. GN-geomodellene vil muliggjøre sanntids data-assimilering og gi støtte til beslutninger. DISTINGUISH vil utvikle disse teknologiene i en geostyringsarbeidsflyt. Prosjektet introduserer ny tankegang ved å erstatte "deteksjonsdybde" med "prediksjonsavstand" og sannsynlighetsbetinget beslutningsstøtte.
 
Vi planlegger tidlig testing med data fra operasjonelle felt. Vi vil inkludere fremtidige teknologibrukere for å akselerere adopsjon av arbeidsflyten. DISTINGUISH håndterer utfordringer knyttet til brønnplassering som påpekt i "Olje og gass for det 21. århundre" maskinlæringsrapporten. Ifølge rapporten vil bedre brønnplassering føre til oppdagelser på den norske kontinentalsokkelen, gi økt netto nåverdi fra boring og betydelig redusere CO2-utslipp.

The ability to fine-tune well positioning in real-time through geosteering increases the potential value of wells and minimizes risks. Geosteering is essential for petroleum and penetrates other types of drilling, including geothermal projects, civil wells and tunnels, and soon CO2 storage wells. Currently, geosteering decisions rely on fast-paced manual interpretation of real-time data, which needs to consider pre-job modeling, geological setting, and embedded uncertainties. “Given the pace of drilling, the person in charge of geosteering is hard-pressed just to interpret the incoming data, much less contemplating the uncertainty in it” (Rassenfoss, 2022, SPE JPT). Following the newest trends in the industry geosteering workflow of the future shall capture and update uncertainty in an ensemble of geomodels.

The most advanced ensemble methods are the core of closed-loop reservoir management (EnCLRM), the new standard for optimizing the development of petroleum fields. However, EnCLRM is not fast enough for real-time operations due to the involved geomodelling complexity. We plan to remove this complexity by creating new Generative-Network (GN) geomodels. GN-geomodels “learn geology” before the operation and have sub-second performance. They unlock next-generation data assimilation and new predictive decision-support AI. DISTINGUISH will develop these technologies and combine them into the “geosteering workflow of the future.” It proposes a new way of thinking substituting “depth of detection” with “distance of prediction” and probabilistic decision support. 

We plan early testing on field data and with future technology users to accelerate adoption. DISTINGUISH addresses research challenges related to well placement from an Oil-&-Gas-21 machine-learning report. According to the report, better well placement may lead to additional discoveries on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, an increased net present value from drilling, and significant CO2 emission reductions.

DISTINGUISH: Decision support using neural networks to predict geological uncertainties when geosteering

Forestill deg en verden der vi trygt kan lagre karbonutslipp eller hydrogen i brønner etter at de har tjent sitt primære formål. Dette er visjonen bak WELLFATE-prosjektet, som søker å kaste lys over de komplekse underjordiske prosessene rundt borehull. Den norske kontinentalsokkelen, en omfattende petroleumsprovins med nesten 7000 brønner, har løftet om å omdanne uttømte reservoarer til karbonlagring og redusere globale utslipp. Imidlertid har det oppstått bekymringer angående integriteten til disse brønnene, noe som kan ha alvorlige miljø- og klimakonsekvenser. WELLFATE-prosjektet søker å fylle hullene i vår forståelse ved å karakterisere brønnene som lekker gjennom direkte observasjoner og tilgjengelige data. Dessuten vil en observatorium på sjøbunnen bli utplassert for å overvåke utslipp i et helt år. Denne omfattende strategien vil hjelpe oss med å forstå hvilke lekkarsjeveier fluider tar i berggrunnen, identifisere opprinnelsen til disse fluidene, finne ut når lekkasjen starter, og relatere denne dynamikken til brønnkonfigurasjon og geologi. Konsekvensene av WELLFATE-prosjektet er betydelige. Det legger veien for retningslinjer og beste praksis for å optimalisere nedstengingsprosedyrer for brønner og tidlige boringstrategier for å forhindre problemer i økologisk sensitive områder. Til syvende og sist har det som mål å tilby løsninger for å redusere lekkasje fra allerede problematiske brønner. WELLFATE er mer enn bare en vitenskapelig innsats; det er en vei mot bærekraftig havforvaltning. Ved å forhindre at uttømte felt lekker og dermed gjøre dem egnet for CO2-lagring, harmonerer prosjektet med Norges utslippsmål for 2050. Videre posisjonerer WELLFATE Norge som et senter for kunnskap om ren og bærekraftig energi, og støtter teknologisk innovasjon gjennom forskning. Dette er et skritt mot en renere, tryggere og mer bærekraftig fremtid.

The Norwegian Continental Shelf is a vast petroleum province pierced by nearly 7,000 wells, either plugged and abandoned or heading for decommissioning in the next decades. Suspected leakage is raising concerns about potential implications for the environment and for repurposing depleted reservoirs for permanent carbon storage. However, the current scarcity of direct observations and samples at leaky wells limits our confidence in the mapping of emission fluxes, fingerprinting the origin of the methane, and ultimately prevents us from correlating geology and well design to a risk of leakage. The project WELLFATE aims to understand the processes of fluid migration near wells, which is crucial to achieving sustainability of marine resources from the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS), particularly when planning to repurpose depleted reservoirs for carbon storage to reduce global emissions. Our multidisciplinary approach is to characterize leaky well sites by integrating direct seafloor observations, geophysical, geochemical, and geological data with well configuration and P&A data. In addition, we will deploy a seabed observatory to monitor emission rates and variations over a full year. This strategy will allow us to interpret fluid migration pathways confidently, define the origin of the fluids, date the onset of leakage, and relate the system's dynamics with well configuration and geology to identify critical wells and predict possible leakage locations with the help of state-of-the-art fluid flow simulations. Ultimately, the project results can be used to develop guidelines and best practices to optimize well-decommissioning protocols and/or implement early drilling strategies to prevent lateral fracturing in sensitive sedimentary units and propose possible solutions to mitigate already leaking P&A wells.

Understanding Fluid Migration Processes at Offshore Well Sites | WELLFATE

Plattformforsyningsskip (PSV) representerer den største klimagassutslippskilden i offshore-logistikkforsyningskjeden for olje- og gassoperatører på norsk kontinentalsokkel (NCS). Den eksisterende PSV-flåten er ung og ble utviklet med høykvalitetsspesifikasjoner. Derfor forventes overgangen til en nullutslippsflåte å bestå av en periode med flåter som inkluderer både skip som benytter marin gassolje, har retrofit, og nybygg som benytter nye energibærere. Per i dag eksisterer det ingen utslippsfrie PSV-er, men seksten prosent av den norskeide offshorefartøysflåten bruker lavutslippsløsninger, som hybrid elektriske fremdriftssystemer og LNG/LPG. Leverandører av kraftsystem for skip utvikler systemer tilpasset fremtidige energibærere, men tilgjengeligheten av disse energibærerne er lav, og kostnadene forventes å være høye og vil kreve infrastrukturutvikling. Derfor må fremtidige nullutslippsskip for offshorelogistikk utformes som en del av et system der tilgang til, lagringskapasitet for og kostnadene for energi er av større betydning enn i dag, samtidig som de nødvendige nivåene av offshore forsyningsservice og drift opprettholdes.
ZeroLog-prosjektet har et mål om å styrke petroleumsindustrien i overgangen mot bærekraftig nullutslipp offshorelogistikk innen 2050 ved å tilby et rammeverk for integrerte analyser av nullutslippssystemer, energisparende teknologier og design og energieffektiv flåteoperasjon. ZeroLog-konsortiet inkluderer de fleste olje- og gassoperatørene som opererer på norsk sokkel, sammen med et rederi, en batteriprodusent, en logistikktjenesteleverandør. De beste forskere innen logistikk, industriell økonomi, marin teknologi blir med i prosjektet fra SINTEF, NTNU, NHH og tilknyttede internasjonale institusjoner. Prosjektet skal formidle informasjon om aktiviteter og resultater gjennom prosjektets nettside i tillegg til presentasjoner på internasjonale utstillinger og akademiske konferanser.

The purpose of this project is to strengthen the petroleum industry in the transition towards sustainable zero-emission offshore logistics by 2050 by offering a framework for integrated analyses of zero-emission systems, energy-saving technologies & designs and energy-efficient fleet operations.
Main research question: What are the future energy and performance profiles of PSVs with low- and zero-emission technologies and novel hull shapes, and how will this affect the future PSV fleet, operations and offshore logistics on the NCS?
The main research question is supported by the following sub-research questions:
RQ1: What are the most important KPIs for an (future?) PSV on both ship and fleet levels (WP1)
RQ2: How is optimal hull shape for a PSV affected by choice of energy carrier and energy support infrastructure? (WP2)
RQ3: How to determine energy efficient operations for a PSV vessel fleet exploiting individual ship technological capabilities and supporting infrastructure? (WP3)

Towards sustainable zero-emission offshore logistics

Analytical Solutions Toolbox for Multiphase Core Analysis

Det er en utfordring å lime ting sammen under vann. I sjøvann er dette enda vanskeligere på grunn av saltinnholdet, noe som resulterer i at styrken og holdbarheten til undervannslim er begrenset. Dette er et problem for bruksområder i maritim industri som undervannsrobotikk, undervannsreparasjon og tetting av lekkasjer under vann.

SEAD-prosjektet vil utvikle nye miljøvennlige materialer som kan brukes som holdbart og permanent undervannslim for bruk i sjøvann. Dette limet kan brukes til reparasjon av undervanns-strukturer, festing av sensorer osv. I tillegg vil vi utvikle reversibelt lim (post-it-lapp effekt) for føttene til marine roboter og andre ting som trenger midlertidig feste.

For å oppnå ønsket effekt vil vi kombinere kunnskap om mekanismene som livet i havet bruker for å feste seg til overflater under vann (biomimikk) med avansert kjemi og adhesjonsfysikk.

Sustainable underwater adhesion is a significant challenge for applications in marine industry such as underwater robotics, underwater repair, and subsea sealants. This is especially apparent in seawater with its elevated ion content. Since organisms like mussel and octopus excel in underwater adhesion, synthetic adhesives mimicking mussel-inspired adhesive chemistry or octopus-inspired adhesive structure have been widely reported. However, prior-art adhesive research often studies how material chemistry and surface geometry independently impact the adhesion behavior. There is a substantial knowledge gap regarding how chemical, geometric, and material properties interact to control underwater adhesion. Moreover, the performance and durability of the reported adhesives are severely limited under harsh environments. The SEAD project aims to develop novel adhesive strategies that tailor tunable and durable adhesives for target applications in seawater by integrating the knowledge from biomimetics, polymer chemistry and adhesion mechanics into a cooperative framework via theoretical calculation, advanced simulation and pathbreaking experiments. Unlike previous work, that often use mussel-inspired catechol-based compounds for underwater adhesion, this project will explore the potential of plant-inspired pyrogallol-based compounds as adhesion anchoring sites. This is expected to hinder the adverse oxidation of hydroxyl groups in catechol, and thereby improve the performance and durability of adhesives in seawater. The research will accelerate the fundamentals of seawater adhesion to transform the developed adhesives for different substrates in harsh environments. The gained knowledge on tunable and durable seawater adhesion will stimulate the advancement of subsea structure design and provide new paradigms in adhesive applications, facilitating the development of a sustainable ocean economy.

Tunable and Durable Seawater Adhesives

Vi tenker som regel at forurensning er noe som først og fremst påvirker et individ der og da i møte med en forurensningskilde. Men hva om effekter av eksponering av for eksempel rå-olje kan spores på tvers av generasjoner – at den eksponeringen som et individ en gang har blitt utsatt for kan få målbare effekter på for eksempel fertilitet hos sine barn og barnebarn som ikke en gang var påtenkt når eksponeringen skjedde? Hva kan det ha å si for en bærekraftig bruk og forvaltning av fiskebestander? Selv om vi vet at fiskeembryoer og -larver er ekstremt følsomme for oljesøl ved direkte eksponering, vet vi mye mindre om følsomheten til voksen fisk i viktige livsfaser som for eksempel i reproduksjonsperioden. Og enda mindre om mulige effekter for fremtidige generasjoner. De mest sensitive livsstadiene for et individ er ikke nødvendigvis de mest følsomme i et populasjons-perspektiv. Vi vil derfor undersøke følsomheten av oljeeksponering for reproduserende voksne, og konsekvensene for kommende generasjoner, for å evaluere egnetheten til dagens forvaltnings- og risikovurderingsmodeller.
Toxigen vil kombinere avanserte kjemiske og molekylære analytiske tilnærminger for å belyse toksisitetsmekanismene til komponenter i råolje og effekter på reproduksjonssuksessen til fisk og overlevelse av påfølgende generasjoner. Prosjektet er bygget rundt tre hypoteser: 1) oljeeksponering forstyrrer egg- og melkeproduksjonen hos voksne, 2) giftige forbindelser overføres fra foreldre til avkom og 3) effekter kan arves over flere generasjoner.
Vår ambisjon er å knytte molekylære endringer til biotilgjengelige forbindelser og endringer i reproduksjonssuksess og overlevelse i første, andre og tredje generasjon fisk.  Til syvende og sist vil prosjektet presentere en analyse av nye resultater i en vurderingsrapport til interessenter, og diskutere hvorvidt disse funnene er av en slik bekymring at de krever ytterligere undersøkelser og revisjon av eksisterende risiko- og konsekvensanalyseverktøy.

A fundamental and enduring challenge for ecosystem managers developing risk and impact assessment tools is to predict the extent of impact that spilled oil can have on the immediate fish populations and on future generations. Modelling approaches are important tools for these assessments, but they currently suffer from two major shortcomings: 1) the failure to acknowledge that effects can be transferred through several generations and 2) the assumption that a small group of toxic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, can be used as chemical proxy for exposure to complex petroleum mixtures. Emerging understanding within petroleum ecotoxicology now suggests that model outputs lack robustness. Up until now studies have not been able to determine the effects over multiple generations, and to properly identify the causative agents within petroleum. ToxiGen is an interdisciplinary study that will determine the effects and toxic mechanisms of petroleum on the reproductive success of fishes and subsequent generations. Our ambition is to identify the compounds responsible for alterations in reproductive success in adults and survival and fitness of the progeny. We will work with Atlantic cod and polar cod that are of high ecological and commercial importance, respectively. Zebrafish will be used for high-risk and generational experiments. We will work at the frontier of analytical chemistry to characterize the toxic fractions of petroleum. To disentangle mechanisms of toxicity, novel methods such as micro-injecting compounds into eggs will be used. We will combine different approaches to identify new biomarkers of exposure and effects. The new knowledge will then be integrated into reproductive adverse outcome pathways to be available through an internationally harmonized knowledgebase. Ultimately, ToxiGen will provide environmental managers with knowledge and data for models, and methods to detect and monitor the presence and impact of these complex mixtures in situ.

Reproductive toxicity and transgenerational effects of petroleum mixtures in fish

Gassturbiner som går på naturgass er hovedkraftkilden offshore.  Derfor står naturgass for det meste av klimagassutslipp på den norske sokkelen. Avkarbonisering av offshore-aktivitet er nødvendig for å nå nullutslippsmålet. Avkarbonisering av gassturbiner kan gjøres ved å bruke karbonfrie drivstoff, som ammoniakk. Dette gjelder spesielt i installasjoner der det ikke er mulig å implementere andre utslippsreduserende løsninger på grunn av lokasjon. Ammoniakk er et attraktivt alternativt drivstoff fordi det har høy energitetthet; små volum inneholder en større mengde energi sammenlignet med andre drivstoff.  Transport av ammoniakk er allerede kommersialisert og fraktteknologien er moden, så det er mulig å transportere ammoniakk på land til installasjoner offshore.  Ren ammoniakk kan ikke brukes direkte som drivstoff for gassturbiner. En løsning for å omdanne ammoniakken til et funksjonelt drivstoff er via «cracking» av ammoniakk for å produsere en blanding av hydrogen og ammoniakk som kan brukes som gassturbin-drivstoff. Ammoniakk-cracking er kommersialisert, men dagens teknologi har betydelige ulemper. 

 DECAMMP skal bidra til å løse viktige tekniske barrierer for ammoniakk-cracking, som mangelen på rimelige katalysatorer som virker ved lave temperaturer. Dette vil gjøre det mulig å benytte seg av overskuddsenergien ved offshore installasjoner. DECAMMP skal også utvikle den nødvendige reaktor-teknologien, samt en energi-effektiv prosess som er tilpasset kravene offshore. Dette skal gjøres ved å ta hensyn til blandingene som er optimale for gassturbinddrift og samlet utslippsreduksjon. 

 I dag er det en stor flåte med gassturbiner i drift verden over som kan ha nytte av resultatene fra DECAMMP. Selv om konseptet er rettet mot offshore installasjoner, der resultatene vil ha betydelig innvirkning, forventer vi også at kraftproduksjon med bruk av ammoniakk og bruk av lavtemperatur-cracking også vil spille en rolle i framtidens nullutslipps-kraftsystem på land.

Gas turbines using natural gas as fuel are the main source for generating electrical and mechanical power, as well as heat, in offshore oil and gas recovery installations. On the Norwegian Continental Shelf, gas turbines remain the main greenhouse gas emissions source. Ammonia and hydrogen do not produce CO2 when combusted to produce power or heat, and are thus regarded as potential alternative fuels to fully decarbonize greenfield and brownfield offshore oil and gas facilities, particularly remote locations where implementing other solutions is not feasible. Ammonia is an energy-dense fuel and shipping technology is mature. Considering the low upstream emissions of blue and green ammonia, there is large potential of reducing overall CO2 emissions by changing fuels. There is a large fleet of operating gas turbines worldwide that could benefit in the mid-term from such transition towards full decarbonization. The use of carbon-free fuels for power generation is therefore an attractive alternative to drastically reduce CO2 offshore emissions and reach 2030 and 2050 environmental goals. 
The DECAMMP concept will enhance Norway's position as worldwide example for promoting and developing low-carbon offshore solutions. DECAMMP will develop the design for the critical components, processes and operational strategies required to enable the use of ammonia-hydrogen blends for carbon-free offshore power generation. With a holistic and interdisciplinary approach, DECAMMP will contribute to overcome existing key technical barriers for deployment, such as the lack of catalysts for low-temperature ammonia decomposition using the heat sources available offshore, as well as the lack of a compact reactor and process considering offshore requirements and operational demands.

DECAMMP - Decomposed ammonia for carbon-free power generation

Sabotasjen av Nord Streams gassrør i Østersjøen viste verden at det geopolitiske risikobildet er dramatisk endret. Hva gjør forskere for å svare på det nye risikobildet? 

For å takle disse utfordringene er et nytt NTNU-prosjekt ved navn Safeguard i gang. Målet er å gjøre autonome roboter i stand til å patruljere havområder. Prosjektet skal utvikle smarte autonome systemer for å overvåke og inspisere vital infrastruktur og produksjon i havet. Prosjektet ser blant annet på hvordan risikostyring kan bidra til å utvikle sikrere og mer effektive autonome systemer. Et eksempel er hvordan roboter kan bo under vann, og inspisere og overvåke undervannsinstallasjoner. 

– Nord Stream viste oss sårbarheten til viktig infrastruktur i havet. Både energiforsyningen og Europas økonomi ble rammet. Se for deg hvordan roboter kan patruljere viktige områder og sørge for at det er trygt, sier Ingrid Bouwer Utne.  Hun er professor på NTNUs institutt for marin teknikk og er forsker og prosjektleder i Safeguard.  –	Vi ønsker rett og slett å overvåke kritisk infrastruktur i havet mer effektivt, forteller hun. – Autonome systemer gjør det mulig å samle inn store mengder data. Det muliggjør effektiv overvåking, inspeksjon og intervensjon, og det blir enklere å utføre kjedelige, skitne og farlige oppgaver med mindre avhengighet av at mennesker må være fysisk tilsted. – For å sikre at disse oppdragene går bra, må vi gjøre robotene enda mer intelligente og risiko-bevisste. Vi ønsker å pushe fram løsninger for mer langvarige operasjoner i havet.  

Samarbeidspartnere i Safeguard er Equinor og Vår Energi, Forsvarets forskningsinstitutt (FFI) og Institutt for marin teknikk ved NTNU. – Prosjektet kombinerer praktisk know-how og erfaring med vitenskapelig ekspertise, og vi skal utdanne 3 p.hd.-studenter, avslutter Ingrid Bouwer Utne.

Securing critical infrastructures, production assurance, efficient risk management, and reliable monitoring and communication in vast and remote areas are more important than ever. The risks are changing dramatically, driven by climate change and the geopolitical situation. The recent sabotage of the North Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea demonstrated the vulnerability of critical infrastructures in the ocean, the negative consequences for the energy supply and Europe´s economy. To mitigate these risk challenges, this project will develop technology solutions for intelligent autonomous systems and robotic organizations in persistent long-range safeguarding operations, realizing a patrolling surveillance system for the critical infrastructures in the ocean. Autonomous systems enable extensive data collection, surveillance, inspection, and intervention in the ocean due to cost efficiency, and the possibility for performing continuous and dull-dirty-dangerous operations with less dependence on human operators. These attributes make autonomous systems desirable for robotic organizations performing operations to detect, map, monitor, inspect, and protect critical ocean infrastructures and the environment, i.e., extensive safeguarding operations pushing endurance capabilities. Successful missions in the unstructured and harsh ocean, however, requires improved safety, intelligence, and operational capabilities through optimized observation platform systems and supervisory risk control, which is addressed in this project. SAFEGUARD constitutes a unique partnership between industry and academia, i.e., Equinor, Vår Energi, the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment (FFI), and the Department of Marine Technology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Intelligent autonomous systems for safeguarding operations and
infrastructure at sea

Uventa høge poretrykk i undergrunnen er også i dag ei utfordring, sjølv etter tiår med olje og gassleiting og produksjon på norsk sokkel. Uventa høge trykk kan føre til fleire typar negative hendingar under boreoperasjonar.  Det kan komme gass inn i brønnen, enn kan få slamtap og i verste tilfelle ukontrollert utblåsing. Det er ofte store usikkerheit knytt til predikering av poretrykk og hol stabilitet, noko som kan føre til nedetid og høge kostnader. Fleire ulike metodar blir nytta i dag for predikere trykket. Disse metodane baserer seg på sanntidsdata samla inn under boring, teoretiske modeller eller ein kombinasjon av nye data og modeller. 
I praksis, er det berre ein liten del av alle eksisterande data som blir brukt. En avgrensar seg gjerne til data frå nokre få omkringliggande brønnar. Geologiske modeller blir ikkje brukt i analysane. Den nye ideen er å bruke alle tilgjengelege data, både historiske og nye data, med å bruke hybrid modellering. Hybrid modellering tyder å kombinere fysikk baserte modeller og maskinlæring. Det kan være tredimensjonale modeller av undergrunnen med ulike sandsteins og skiferlag, kombinert med maskinlæring med data frå brønnar. Modellane kan dekke store områder på hundre kilometers skala. Med den nye arbeidsmetoden kan ein bruke maskinlæring på potensielt hundrevis av brønnar, og få betre predikering av brønnstabilitet og trykk for nye brønnar. 
Forskingsprosjektet «Big Pressure» er leda av SINTEF Industri, i tett samarbeid med NTNU, SINTEF Digital og Universitetet i Munich, i tillegg til Equinor og ConocoPhillips som industripartnarar. Ein doktorgradstudent vil bli tilsett i prosjektet.

Unexpected high overpressures in the subsurface are still a challenge on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, even after 
decades of oil and gas exploration and production. Unpredicted overpressures may lead to challenges in drilling 
operations, such as mud loss, kicks, and in the worst case, loss of wells. Currently, drilling teams experience large 
uncertainties in prediction of pore pressure and wellbore stability, leading to extensive non-productive time (NPT) 
and large costs. Today, several approaches are used to predict the pore pressures along a planned well path: either 
using well logs, seismic, modelling approaches or combinations thereof.
In practice, only a small amount of existing data, and often only from nearby wells, are taken into account, and the 
geological models are not used in the predictions. The idea is to use all data available, both historical and real time 
data, by using hybrid analytics and machine learning techniques to get better pressure prediction and thereby 
improved mud weight estimates. The novel approach aims at combining existing physical three-dimension 
geomodels and pressure models, with machine learning applied to all well data available in a sedimentary basin (on 
a hundred km scale). The project aims to move forward the state-of-art on pressure and mud weight window 
prediction, built on the existing tools, to include machine learning using data from potentially hundreds of wells, to 
estimate key parameters that are used to predict well stability. The BigPressure project will be led by SINTEF 
Industry, in tight collaboration with researchers at SINTEF Digital, with NTNU and University of Munich as well as 
industry partners Equinor and ConnocoPhillips, who will contribute with industry perspectives on 
operation challenges and requirements.

Though difficult to quantify, the variety of possible ID document frauds at borders is a reality that threatens politicians holding responsibility for borders as well as EU citizens. Based on the needs expressed by practitioners, the iMARS consortium has shaped a project that will: 1/ improve the operational capacity of passport application and border control operators by providing both - short-term adhoc solutions ensuring reliable passport application procedures - and mid-term solutions with no-reference and differential analysis solutions that can in particular detect manipulated and morphed passport images as well as document fraud. iMARS will provide: • Image morphing and manipulation attack detection solutions to assess ID documents validity against document fraud, during enrolment and renewal steps, as well as at the border crossing stations • Document verification and fraud detection solutions to support border guards in the verification process by providing mobile tools that can check document’s integrity To reach the targeted TRL6, these technologies will be validated in laboratory conditions using operational data collected from six border control sites (with border to countries outside EU). 2/ ensure the uptake of its outcomes after the project’s end. iMARS will: • promote usability/ergonomic aspects by providing training, guidelines and best practices to border guards and passport application officers • contribute to the ongoing standardisation efforts in the field of Presentation Attack Detection and face image quality • provide open access benchmarks (2 datasets with multiple enrolment morphed face images and border gate probe images) on a specific testing platform serving follow-on research activities • ensure that the technologies developed are accepted by citizens and respect privacy and legal EU regulations.

Real-tIme on-site forenSic tracE qualificatioN

While time is an important factor for successful outcome of the crime investigation, the traditional forensic examinations are usually time consuming. It can be very problematic when investigations are underway and quick results are needed. Traces must be detected on-site as soon as possible before they degrade and loose forensic information important for criminal investigation. Based on the results of the FORLAB project, the aim of the RISEN project is the development of a set of real-time contactless sensors for the optimization of the trace, detection, visualisation, identification and interpretation on site, with a consequent reduction of the time and resources in the laboratory, and for a fast exchange of information among LEAs.  The new proposed approach could be applied to the classical forensic investigations and to disaster sites, e.g. after a terrorist attack. The objectives of the RISEN project will be obtained by: -Developing and demonstrating contactless, non-destructive, automated sensors to identify, select and label trace materials; -Processing and sending in real-time acquired in-situ data to a 3D Augmented Crime Scene Investigation system to produce an interactive 3D model of the scene with position and labelling of traces and relative results of the on-site analysis. The recreated 3D model of the scene resorts to augmented reality techniques for sensor data, collected evidence and identified points of interest in order to deliver a realistic and immersive visual environment for investigators, allowing them to conduct highly detailed investigations. The crime scenes, with analytical information from traces, will be digitally frozen to be available at any time for several purposes in the criminal justice system. The identified traces will be digitally marked and inventoried, and a digitalised Chain of Custody will be established in real-time implementing mechanisms that assure data integrity over its lifecycle. 

Extract Forensic Information for LEAs from Encrypted SmartPhones

Technological advances and development of sophisticated functions in mobile devices led to new usages and dependencies. Mobile phones are often a key factor in criminal cases, intrusions, intellectual property theft, security threats, and more. The data stored in these devices may contain critical evidence associated with the above-mentioned crimes.  The latest generation of devices incorporate new security features and encryption schemes to "protect" the device and its associated user data. The other side of the coin is that the rapid processing of critical evidence by various information retrieval techniques is slowed down, if not made impossible. The mobile device forensics field is a challenging area for forensic analysts, particularly given the increasing number of data encryption mechanisms. The EXFILES project aims to provide law enforcement agencies (LEAs) with new tools to extract data and associated evidence from these devices in strict legal contexts. A unique consortium of five LEAs, universities and cyber security companies from the EU have joined forces to address these challenges. Together, they defined three areas of work on technical data extraction techniques, namely software exploitation, hardware methods and combined methods. In addition, tools and methods inspired by other areas of information security (e.g. security assessments based on common criteria) will lead to new judicial methods of accessing data for lawful investigations. Another unique dimension of EXFILES is the clear focus on the ethical and legal aspects of research and exploitation as well as dissemination and training activities for the next generation of forensic experts. The main objective of EXFILES project is to improve Law Enforcement Agencies techniques and methods, to extract digital evidence from modern encrypted smartphones used by criminals based on holistic approach (both software and hardware). 

Mapping Interoperable EU PPDR Broadband Communication Applications and Technology

The BROADMAP project will take the first steps towards future procurement of ‘interoperable next generation of broadband radio communication systems for public safety and security’ (DRS-18) to improve PPDR’s service to Europe’s citizens and enhance interoperability across borders.   The primary goal of this project is to:  Collect and validate the PPDR (Public Protection and Disaster Relief) organisations’ existing requirements with the aim to establish a core set of specifications, and roadmap for procurement, to achieve future evolution of EU broadband applications and interoperable radio communication solutions  This project implements a Coordination and Support Action (CSA) with the purpose to inform and guide the future procurement of research and development, networks and devices and their deployment to realise new interoperable broadband networks, and the ecosystems of applications and services to support the PPDR and critical communications community.   Project BROADMAP addresses the following goals: – To collect, assess and validate the PPDR’s wireless broadband communication requirements – To establish a core set of specifications to fulfil the requirements – To define transition roadmaps for research and standardisation for future evolution of European interoperable radio communication solutions, within legal procurement constraints – To prepare the ground for a new eco-system to catalyse new applications, services and processes making use of broadband capabilities for public safety and security – To utilise the strength of the PPDR community through our partners, their expertise, knowledge, networks and relations with the aim to achieving interoperability across Europe. This importantly includes nuances of societal differences, including different cultures, geography, processes and legal frameworks   BROADMAP integrates 15 potential buyers/end users from 15 countries, 8 of which are responsible ministries. 48 further end users provide initial support.
