ENUMATH 2017: cutting-edge science building on a long tradition

Tildelt: kr 0,25 mill.

The European Conference on Numerical Mathematics and Advanced Applications (ENUMATH) is a series of conferences held every two years to provide a forum for discussion of basic aspects and new trends in numerical mathematics and challenging scientific and industrial applications at the highest level of international expertise. The first ENUMATH conference was held in Paris in 1995 with successive conferences being held at various locations across Europe, at Heidelberg (1997), Jyvaskyla (1999), Ischia Porto (2001), Prague (2003), Santiago de Compostela (2005), Graz (2007), Uppsala (2009), Leicester (2011), Lausanne (2013), and Ankara (2015). Enumath 2017 has been held in Voss, from 25th to 29th of September and has attracted 334 researchers from 128 institutions, among them being famous mathematicians from Europe or US. Almost 100 phD students participated at Enumath 2017, which is a huge success in the view of the long-term impact of the conference. There were 29 MS and more then 300 scientific talks. A Springer book with the proceedings of Enumath is under preparation. The conference was an outstanding event, the best advertisement for the mathematics in Norway and the spring for new collaborations and inspiration for the participants.

The European Conference on Numerical Mathematics and Advanced Applications (ENUMATH) is a series of conferences held every two years to provide a forum for discussion on basic aspects and new trends in numerical mathematics and challenging scientific and industrial applications at the highest level of international expertise. This is the first time that Norway has been chosen as the location for this conference with UiB as local organizers. The conference will be held in Voss, at Hotel Fleischer from 25th to 29th of September 2017. The importance of computational algorithms and their developments has increased dramatically in science and engineering as reflected by the unprecedented use of computers in present times. In fact, mathematics is now regarded as a technology in its own right and has been playing a crucial role in industrial activities. At ENUMATH 2017, recent results and new trends in the designing, implementation, and analysis of numerical algorithms as well as their applications to pressing scientific and industrial problems will be discussed. Along with the theoretical developments, a major thrust of the conference is to present numerical methods for interdisciplinary applications, providing a platform for cross-fertilisation and organic growth of mathematical ideas. This conference presents an excellent opportunity to make the best possible advertisement for the applied mathematics in Norway. In this respect, 3 invited speakers (A. Zana, M. Rognes, K.A. Mardal) will represent Norway at ENUMATH 2017, receiving recognition at the highest scientific level. A successful organization of this conference is expected to yield immense benefits in the international integration and recognition of Norwegian applied and computational mathematics. We hope that with the help of NFR, ENUMATH 2017 will be a great success and will further strengthen the status of Norway in the European map.
