Control Plane for 5G

Tildelt: kr 0,20 mill.

One of the key challenges for 5G is to develop an access agnostic control plane which has a common interface towards heterogeneous access network technologies; is open for user/application service creation; can take context aware decisions; and most importantly has the ability to meet the requirements of the different verticals such as e-health, automotive, media and entertainment. Keeping these challenges in mind the aim of this project is to define and develop a control plane architecture for 5G which is access agnostic, context aware, open for third parties and modular. The modularization concept wherein we can plug-and-play different network functions in different network slices is highly relevant to meet the diverse requirements of the different 5G verticals. With the end user in focus (can be a device in case of IoT) the aim is to provide seamless migration between the different network slices so that the user or the thing not only experiences the pervasiveness of the network but also the best service at each time. It is envisioned that such architecture should enable service execution and peering possibilities anywhere in the network. Furthermore this converged architecture with shared functions between different types of access networks also has the benefit of low cost when the number of devices and traffic volume increases. Finally the openness of the control plane to service creation mostly by API-based interaction with 3rd parties enables a multitude of services and innovations which is a must for future digital Telcos and service providers.
