Drugs and Forbidden Knowledge in the Dutch Republic

Tildelt: kr 93 969

Publication of an adapted and translated version of the doctoral thesis "Drugs and Forbidden Knowledge in the Dutch Republic" at the publishing house Amsterdam University Press. The publication will take place winter 2017/2018. The doctoral thesis is written in Dutch and is the result of a PhD project that was conducted at Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages, HF, the University of Oslo, on the poetry of Joannes Six van Chandelier (1620-1695). The disputation of the doctoral thesis took place January 2015. Since then, the thesis has been through a process of peer review at the publishing house. Amsterdam University Press is a recognized international publishing house at the Norwegian Association of Higher Education's list of authorized publication channels. The manuscript has been adapted into book form and it has been changed in accordance to the referee assessment, obtained by the publishing house. The objective is to bring the innovative findings of the doctoral project to a wider international academic audience. The high scientific standard and the relevance for the research field have been affirmed by both the disputation committee and the referee assessment; see the quotation from the former: "Six is little known outside the world of Dutch literary studies, although he is one of the most curious and arresting figures of Dutch Golden Age literature. If revised, Spaans' exciting and comprehensive re-contextualization of Six' poetry has the potential to change this regrettable state of affairs"; and from the latter: "If rewritten along the lines here suggested, I would expect there to be a wide academic interest in the book, especially in the anglophone world". The publisher house will cover the costs for publishing the book, but fundings for translation are needed. The grants from Research Council of Norway will cover costs for translation of the manuscript from Dutch into a major world language, English.
