Ceramic membrane surface

Tildelt: kr 83 999

Support for a personal exchange visit is applied for young researcher Dr. Jonathan M. Polfus (b. 1984) employed at SINTEF Materials and Chemistry for an extended research stay at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MiT) for 6 months from January to June 2017. The exchange visit therefore addressed the MoU between USA and Norway for collaborative R&D within energy. Professor Harry Tuller at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering is Head of the Crystal Physics and Electroceramics Laboratory at MiT. His group is world leading in the field of functional ceramics for energy applications with focus on defects, diffusion, electrical and electrochemical properties of metal oxides and applications such as solid-oxide fuel cells and gas separation membranes. The collaborative focus of the MiT research visit will be both computational and experimental. Density Functional Theory calculations will be performed for the fundamental understanding of oxide surfaces with focus on the BaZrO3 membrane material. The Yildiz laboratory develops and implements state-of-the-art scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy capabilities in harsh in situ conditions of temperature, reactive gasses and mechanical stresses. The main experimental part of the research visit will be detailed surface characterization of these membranes before and after operation, as well as the role of exposing the membranes to harsh conditions such as H2S impurities.
