Workshop on hydropower scheduling in China

Tildelt: kr 13 750

China is the world's largest electricity consumer and has massive hydroelectric resources, while in Norway 99% electricity supply is from hydropower. SINTEF Energy Research has more than 40-years' experience with generation scheduling in hydrothermal power systems. The cooperation between SINTEF Energy Research and Tsinghua University will increase the possibility to exchange knowledge and apply this knowledge to further develop methods in hydropower scheduling for use under the Chinese regulation scheme. In 2016, two researchers from SINTEF Energy Research, Hans Ivar Skjelbred and Jiehong Kong, held a meeting with Prof. Ma Jiming at Tsinghua University in Beijing. The two sides established a preliminary understanding of each other's fields of expertise and agreed to seek for future cooperation. In 2017, we want to extend the ongoing cooperation between SINTEF Energy Research and Tsinghua University in China and check the feasibility of application of scheduling methods in the context of the Chinese hydropower regime. After the 3-day workshop in Beijing, we will have established a close connection with the Chinese partner. Given enough common interest in further development of the knowledge of hydropower scheduling, we will seek to apply for a joint KPN project in the autumn of 2017. Other possibilities for future cooperation also be discussed, such as bilateral education, field trips, case studies and joint publications. At the same time, key employees at Tsinghua University also get a general understanding of operational hydropower scheduling methods. They can use their contact network established over many years in the business to find potential hydropower producers in China that are willing to test the methods or conduct case studies. As particular example is Huanghe Hydropower Development Co. Ltd that has 16 hydropower plants along the Yellow river and whose regulation scheme seems well suited for current hydropower scheduling methods.
