Accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, rapid digitalisation has fundamentally transformed European working conditions. While its positive consequences are well recognised, digital transformation also puts a sorely needed part of the European workforce at risk of unemployment, poverty and social exclusion. IDILAB (Implications of digital transformation for migrant labour) investigates the impacts that technological progress and subsequent structural changes have on the labour market integration of migrant workers. By developing a new methodological approach, IDILAB shall provide novel evidence on migrants’ exposure to the process of digitalisation, and formulate evidence-based and innovative policy options for the EU and national governments to improve on the scope and adequacy of national and European policy directed at encouraging a fair digital transition for all, including migrants. The proposed project will contribute with new knowledge on migrants’ own perspectives on barriers and enablers for a sustainable integration in a fast-changing labour market. I, the experienced researcher (Dr Olga Gheorghiev, the Czech Republic), will work with a European centre of excellence (the Research Centre for Digitalisation of Public Services and Citizenship (CEDIC, OsloMet, Norway), and the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI, Belgium) for intersectoral knowledge transfer, career development, and European added value.

Implications of digital transformation for migrant labour

Employing a decolonial approach inspired by critical museology and Indigenous studies, LIT aims to initiate a visual restitution/rematriation process fostering attention to Sámi people’s experiences during colonial encounters, and to illuminate individual life-stories of women and children photographed by Italian anthropologists Mantegazza and Sommier between 1879 and 1886. It wishes to generate dialogical knowledge of unpublished visual/written materials, enabling Sámi communities of interest to gain access to these scholars’ photographs. In complex socio-historical Indigenous/settler contexts such as Sápmi (the Sámi homeland), Sámi people’s control over their own heritage has proved essential to processes of cultural and ethnopolitical self-determination. Part of the Sámi visual heritage consists of photographs taken - often through mild violence and coercion - by academics engaged in physical anthropological practices involving Sámi individuals of all ages and genders. The resulting academic and divulgative publications circulated in Europe for decades, shaping and reinforcing stereotypes of Sámi peoples and cultures. Photos taken in colonial encounters by late-19th/early-20th century scholars to visualize Sámi people’s supposed biological-cultural inferiority (until a few decades ago inaccessible to the Sámi) have become important means of decolonization and empowerment through art and activism. The visual restitution of such photographs is of the utmost importance not only from a cultural heritage perspective but is also considered by Sámi institutions and individuals as an urgent necessity. LIT proposes an innovative approach based on the co-construction of knowledge and with a gender dimension. I shall reconstruct life stories of women and children photographed by Italian ethnologists, locating their descendants and returning their photographs to their communities. LIT would benefit my career, making me a leading researcher in Sami Studies and museology.

Locating Intergenerational Ties, rematriating late-19th-century unpublished photographs of Sámi Women and Children

AGREE tar for seg klimaendringers innvirkning på kulturarv gjennom tverrfaglige metoder og samarbeid mellom ulike samfunnsaktører. Prosjektet tar særlig for seg urbane områder som påvirkes av flom. Målet er å forstå det komplekse forholdet mellom forvaltning av kulturarv, klimatilpasning og samfunnets sårbarhet, og å se på tiltak for å minimere risiko for tap og ødeleggelse som følge av klimaendringer. Sentrale delmål inkluderer integrering av strategier for bevaring av kulturarv med strategier for klimatilpasning, spesielt gjennom konseptet Historisk Urban Landskap (HUL). 

AGREE vil utvikle en beslutningsmodell forankret i HUL-konseptet som sammenligner dagens forvaltningspraksis med historiske data for å belyse sårbarhet og klimatilpasning i en urban kontekst. AGREE vil fremme transformative strategier for klimatilpasning ved å evaluere beslutningstakernes forståelse av disse samspillene. 

Prosjektet ledes av University of Leeds (Storbritannia), og har Norsk institutt for kulturminneforskning (NIKU), Politecnico di Torino (Italia) med som partnere. ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property), British Council (Storbritannia), UK’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (Storbritannia), Hull City Council (Storbritannia) og Innlandet fylke (Norge) deltar som samarbeidspartnere. Gjennom dette samarbeidet skal prosjektet bidra til å forme politikk og klimastrategier, både lokalt og globalt.  AGREE vil også engasjere publikum for å øke bevisstheten om klimatilpasning og mobilisere til felles handling.  Gjennom bred involvering skal AGREE bidra til å sikre at kulturarven forblir beskyttet og motstandsdyktig i møte med klimaendringer.

Alt i alt vil AGREE utforske klimaendringers påvirkning på kulturarv med en praksisorientert tilnærming, og med fokus på samarbeid, databasert beslutningstaking og samfunnsengasjement for å sikre vår felles kulturarv for fremtidige generasjoner.

AGREE champions transformative sustainability in response, emphasizing interdisciplinary methodologies and societal shifts. It explores the intricate link between cultural heritage governance, climate adaptation, and community resilience, rooted in responses to flooding in urban contexts. AGREE promotes the Historic Urban Landscape concept for integrative decision-making in climate adaptation, considering community resilience amidst environmental changes. An interactive Geographic Information System platform will illuminate this interplay over time. An innovative AGREE's contribution is a decision-making model grounded in the HUL paradigm. This model juxtaposes current national and local policies enabling cultural heritage integration in climate adaptation with historical data sources revealing urban resilience lessons and changes in the built environment over time. AGREE employs transformative governance concepts to evaluate decision-makers comprehension of these synergies and their perspectives. It advances transformative climate adaptation by uncovering potentials and barriers within heritage governance in case studies from the UK, Norway, and Italy. Beyond research, AGREE will shape policies with multi-scalar and cross-sectorial governance, interpreting climate intricacies through cultural heritage. It will strengthen global, national, and local heritage-focused climate strategies through partnerships with the British Council, ICCROM, and the UK's Department for Culture, Media, and Sport and local stakeholders, such as Hull City Council (UK) and Innlandet Region (Norway). AGREE also engages the public, raising climate adaptation awareness and mobilizing collective action, benefiting governmental climate efforts.

Advancing Cultural Heritage Governance for Resilient Climate Adaptation

Kulturlandskap leverer viktige økosystemtjenester, blant annet erfaringsbasert, lokal kunnskap om hvordan man kan tilpasse seg og begrense negative effekter av klimaendringer. Landskapene er sårbare for klimaendringer og andre påvirkninger. Derfor blir kunnskapen kontinuerlig oppdatert og overført mellom generasjoner. Ved å studere seterlandskap i Norge og lignende beitebetingete kulturlandskap i Frankrike og Spania vil vi dokumentere klimaendringer og andre trusler mot immateriell kulturarv. Vi vil beskrive landskapenes egenskaper og hvilke faktorer som muliggjør tilpasninger og avbøtende tiltak, både politiske virkemidler og tiltak i samfunnet ellers. Prosjektet har tre målsetninger:
1. Utvikle en verktøykasse som skal hjelpe lokalsamfunn og beslutningstakere med å vurdere kulturlandskapets sårbarhet og motstandsdyktighet overfor negative endringer ("resiliens").
2. Utvikle formidlingsmateriale om verdien av å bevare erfaringsbasert kunnskap som en levende kulturarv og hvordan den kan bidra til at samfunnet gjør tilpasninger og tiltak mot negative effekter av klimaendringer.
3. Bidra til den vitenskapelige litteraturen om kulturlandskapets sårbarhet og motstandsdyktighet overfor klimaendringer, og til å utvikle strategier for tilpasninger basert på den immaterielle kulturarven.
Prosjektgruppen er internasjonal og tverrfaglig: Amerikanske, franske, norske og spanske forskere skal samarbeide om å dokumentere og modellere endringer i landskapet. Interesseorganisasjoner vil bidra i prosjektstyringen og i sammenstillingen av resultater. Seterbrukere vil bidra med erfaringsbasert kunnskap, og til å analysere og tolke data. I tillegg til verktøy for klimatilpasninger og for forvaltning av den immaterielle kulturarven skal det lages veiledere for journalister, og det skal produseres filmer. Prosjektet skal øke samfunnets bevissthet om immateriell kulturarv og støtte arbeidet med å ivareta erfaringsbasert kunnskap om beitebetingete kulturlandskap.

Cultural landscapes provide essential ecological and sociocultural services and contain insights needed to combat climate change, but they are vulnerable to climate change and other stressors. By examining the cultural landscapes of transhumant pastoralism in France, Norway, and Spain, we will detail climate and other threats to this intangible cultural heritage (ICH), the characteristics and factors that create adaptive capacity in these
systems, and methods for sustaining ICH through community action and policy. The research supports three goals established with societal partners:
1. Develop a toolkit that helps communities and decision-makers assess the vulnerability and resilience of cultural landscapes. 
2. Develop communication resources for the public and policy makers illustrating why threatened cultural heritage matters and how cultural heritage can contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation. 
3. Contribute to scientific literature on the vulnerability and resilience of cultural landscapes and culturally informed strategies for climate mitigation and adaptation. 
Our team builds on multiple collaborations and deep expertise. The most significant involves French, Spanish, and U.S. partners modeling future changes in the French Basque pastoral system. The Basque Centre for Climate Change specializes in Spanish transhumant pastoralism and ecological modeling; Swiss partners designed tools for measuring livelihood resilience, and partners in Norway have expertise in agricultural landscape change, cultural heritage, and public participation. Societal partners (Syndicate of Soule and Concejo de la Mesta) will contribute to project management and synthesis, and farmers are fully engaged in collecting and analyzing data. In addition to adaptation and management tools, the project supports guides for professional journalists and farmer-made films to spread awareness and increase public support for cultural heritage protection.

Mitigation and Adaptation in Cultural Heritage Landscapes: Lessons from Transhumant Pastoral Systems for Managing
Novel Climate Risks

I en verden der klimaendringer er en betydelig bekymring, blir begrepet biokulturell arv en kilde til håp. Denne tilnærmingen erkjenner den nære forbindelsen mellom menneskelige kulturer og den naturlige verden, og gir verdifull informasjon om å overvinne utfordringene på en raskt skiftende planet.
Arktis-regionen påvirkes spesielt av klimaendringer og opplever alarmerende nivåer av oppvarming. Innenfor dette isete landskapet ligger travle bysentre som Fairbanks, Nome, Kirkenes og Tromsø, der virkningene av klimaendringer blir akutt følt. Men mot bakgrunnen av disse problemene, gir den rike mangfoldet av biokulturell arv en reserve av motstandskraft.
Biokulturell arv er basert på tradisjonell økologisk kunnskap (TEK) som er overlevert fra generasjon til generasjon av urbefolkningssamfunn. Denne kunnskapen inkluderer en rikdom av visdom, fra sporing av dyremigrasjoner til å forutsi værmønstre, og gir uvurderlige retningslinjer for tilpasning i møte med miljøsjokk.
Forskere, kunstnere, aktivister og samfunnsmedlemmer samarbeider for å utnytte kraften i biokulturell arv. Gjennom etnografisk feltarbeid, kunstnerisk uttrykk og samfunnsengasjement kombinerer de tradisjonell visdom og moderne vitenskap for å skape innovative løsninger basert på lokal kunnskap.
Prosjektet har som mål å styrke lokale samfunns stemmer og utvikle partnerskap mellom forskere, beslutningstakere og grasrotorganisasjoner. Dette vil være en katalysator for meningsfylt endring både lokalt og globalt.
Avslutningsvis gir biokulturell arv en tidløs visdom som kan hjelpe oss med å oppnå motstandskraft mot klimaendringer. Ved å ære og bevare denne uvurderlige arven, kan vi legge veien for en mer bærekraftig fremtid for kommende generasjoner.

The project focuses on the relationship between climate change and biocultural heritage, a holistic concept that emphasizes the interdependence of natural and cultural elements. The primary objective of the project is to understand how traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and Indigenous knowledge, and human-environment relationships that form the core of biocultural heritage can contribute to climate change adaptation in urban areas and surrounding landscapes. TEK and biocultural heritage have been critical resources for climate adaptation for future Arctic residents. However, climate change processes threaten cultural and biological diversity, underscoring the urgency for adaptation and mitigation measures, especially in the Arctic, which is changing four times faster than the rest of the world. The project will focus on case studies of Arctic cities, including Fairbanks and Nome in the USA and Kirkenes and Tromsø in Norway, and their associated subsistence landscapes that transform even faster. The project team, consisting of social and natural scientists, artists, and activists, will use quantitative and qualitative methods of climate science, remote sensing, human geography, and social anthropology to explore the potential of traditional knowledge and local land use practices as holistic and culturally sensitive tools for climate adaptation. By integrating scientific data with Indigenous long-term observations and artistic explorations, the team hopes to create publicly accessible, co-produced, and place-specific arts and science products. The project's results will be published in academic articles, disseminated via online media, and presented in art and science exhibitions. The main research question of the project is, "How can biocultural heritage integrated into urban and natural landscapes contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts?"

Biocultural Heritage in Arctic Cities: Resource for Climate Adaptation?

Norske kvinner har den høyeste sykefraværsraten av alle OECD-landene, til tross for god befolkningshelse. Kjønnsforskjellen i sykefravær er relativt høyere i Norge (ca. 70% høyere hos kvinner enn hos menn) enn i andre OECD-land (cirka 50% høyere). 

Denne kjønnsforskjellen i sykefravær er en stor utfordring når det gjelder kvinnehelse, livskvalitet og likestilling mellom kjønnene. Årsakene til kjønnsforskjellene er i stor grad uforklarlig i forskningslitteraturen. Det finnes ingen evidensbasert klinisk intervensjon som kan redusere eller forhindre kjønnsforskjellen i sykefravær.

Vi vil bruke data fra to store multisenter randomisert kontrollerte prosjekt fra HelseIArbeid-klinikkene i Nord-Norge. Pasienters bakgrunn og videre forløp vil hentes i registerdata for sykefravær, sysselsetting, langsiktige fordeler, bruk av helsetjenester over en periode på 20 år. 

I arbeidspakke 1 (WP1) vil vi utforske seks hypoteser for høyere sykefraværsrater hos kvinner enn menn. Disse inkluderer kjønnsforskjeller i: 
1. spesifikke helseproblemer, inkludert symptomer og diagnoser, 
2. tanker om årsaker til helseproblem og konsekvenser for sykefravær, 
3. overbevisninger om helsebringende eller forebyggende effektene av sykefravær, 
4. opplevd arbeidsmiljø og utfordringer i mulige konflikter mellom arbeidsliv og privatliv, 
5. opplevde barrierer retur til arbeid fra sykmelding, 
6. ønsker, prioriteringer og forventninger til karriere og andre livsprioriteringer. 

Psykiske lidelser som angst og depresjon, samt muskel- og skjelettplager, er vanlige diagnoser for sykmelding, og vanligere blant kvinner enn menn, og et flertall av HelseIArbeid-pasientene er kvinner. I WP2 vil vi teste om en klinisk intervensjon for å forebygge sykefravær, og øke retur til arbeid blant sykmeldte, kan redusere kjønnsforskjellen i sykefravær. 

Vi vil gjennomføre systematiske litteraturoppsummeringer for begge arbeidspakkene i tidlig prosjektperiode.

Norwegian women have the highest sickness absence rate of all countries in the OECD, despite a good population health. The gender difference in sickness absence is relatively higher in Norway (70%) than in other OECD countries (50%), but the gender difference is observed in all economies where female labour force participation is high.

This gender difference represents a major concern in terms of health, wellbeing, and gender equality and is largely unexplained in the research literature. No intervention has yet proven to be efficacious in reducing this gender gap in sickness absence.

We will use data from two large multi-center RCTs on occupational health and return to work. To the best of our knowledge, these two RCTs constitute the largest within the field of work and health service delivery. The first RCT (n=1144) has successfully completed recruitment, and the second RCT (n=2500) will conclude recruitment during 2024. Patient data will be linked with high quality longitudinal register data from three different sources, containing data on employment, benefits, sickness absence and healthcare service utilisation covering a time span of 20 years.

In WP1, we will go beyond the state-of-the-art and explore three existing hypotheses with a novel angle, in addition to two original hypotheses for the relatively higher sickness absence rates in women compared to men. WP1 is based on secondary analyses of uniquely rich data from the RCTs. This level of detailed data have previously not been available for research on the gender difference in sickness absence.

In WP2, we will test the efficacy of a clinical intervention tailored to prevent sickness absence and promote return to work. Preliminary data indicates that there is high demand for this service in women, with a 70/30 split. This is as expected as the intervention targets those reporting symptoms of common mental disorders and/or musculoskeletal problems, conditions that are more prevalent in women than in men.

Explaining the gender difference in sickness absence and testing the efficacy of a clinical intervention to promote return to work in women

Kunstig intelligens (KI) er på full fart inn i skolen, og har med seg en rekke muligheter, men også problemer. Human Reading Assessment (HUMAN) har som mål å undersøke hvordan teknologien kan tas i bruk i skolen på en måte som setter eleven i sentrum. 

Prosjektet tar utgangspunkt i leseprøvene som elevene må ta på skolen, og svarer på utfordringene KI bringer med seg på flere nivå: 

På det mest grunnleggende nivået vil HUMAN utvikle og undersøke selve algoritmene, og finne ut hvordan de kan brukes i en menneskesentrert leseprøve. 

Neste nivå dreier seg om å undersøke innholdet i læringsteknologien, i dette tilfellet tekstene som skal leses og oppgavene som skal løses. Her legger vi særlig vekt på at Vurderingsforskrifta sier at prøvene ikke bare skal undersøke hva elevene kan, men også fremme læring og bidra til lærelyst. HUMAN vil undersøke hvordan læringsteknologi kan bidra til å utforme tekster og oppgaver slik at de både er engasjerende og støtter læring. I tillegg har vi et mål om å undersøke hvordan prøveresultater bør fremstilles for at lærere skal kunne bruke dem til å tilpasse opplæringen.

På det mest overordnede nivået undersøker vi hva AI i læringsteknologi har å si for barns opplevelse av og handlingsrom i verden, og hva den har å si for barns rettigheter. Hvordan AI implementeres og presenteres i skolen har store konsekvenser for individets evne til å handle med selvstendighet senere i livet. HUMAN handler derfor også om å undersøke utdanningssystemets rolle for individet og i samfunn og arbeidsliv. 

Kunnskapen som frembringes i prosjektet vil gi viktige innspill til fremtidig politikkutforming. Samtidig vil den også være direkte anvendbar for forvaltningen, for lærere og andre aktører i utdanningssektoren.

HUMAN vil foregå i nært samarbeid med norske skoler. Det er et tverrfaglig prosjekt, med forskere innen litteraturvitenskap, lesevitenskap, datavitenskap og juss.

Goal: identify how we can develop a HUMAN digital reading assessment that presents students with tasks adapted to their interests and level of reading skill.

Objectives:
1. New knowledge on the design of engaging texts, tasks and teacher interfaces that can be used to assess reading comprehension
2. A ground-breaking new methodology for adaptive reading assessment, combining IRT with machine learning techniques such as recommender systems and natural language processing
3. Analytical tools for analysing philosophical and legal implications that are specific to the use of AI in assessment
4. A validated and reusable framework harnessing results from objectives 1 to 3 to enable an engaging, precise, and usable assessment

Research questions:
1. What characterizes texts and items that are motivating for children to read and are suitable for valid and efficient assessment of their reading skills?
2. What kind of information do teachers need about their students’ reading skills in order to adapt their instruction?
3. Which methods (from e.g., machine learning, multidimensional scaling and natural language processing) are best suited to match the right text to the right student, with respect to their skills and interest?
4. How can we analyse students’ experience of AI-based digital reading assessment?
5. What are the legal implications of AI-based digital reading assessments?
6. Does the framework established in the project provide a more engaging and precise assessment of reading skills than currently existing assessments?
7. Does the framework established in the project provide the teacher with more actionable information than currently existing assessments?

The project is interdisciplinary. It is anchored in educational assessment, reading science, and computer science. In addition, methods from literature, law and philosophy are employed locally.

Human Reading Assessment

Forbrukersamfunnets vareproduserende industri har antatt slik en massiv skala og rekkevidde at det er åpenbart at design som aktivitet og profesjon har betydelig innvirkning på økologiske systemer både lokalt og globalt. Å designe innebærer viktige beslutninger om hvilke og hvor mye materialer som skal utvinnes fra naturen. Dette prosjektet undersøker hvordan disse avgjørelsene regulerer forbruk, og hvordan dette lite påaktede aspektet ved designprosessen har endret seg fra den andre industrielle revolusjon til i dag. Design sies ofte å ha en forbruks-drivende effekt, både om dette formuleres som kritikk eller løfte. Samtidig har design lenge blitt ansett å være et viktig element i forsøk på å styre forbruket i ønskelige retninger. I alle disse sammenhenger er design knyttet til forbruk gjennom dets manifestasjon som produkter. Men designs kulturelle betydning og økologiske konsekvenser kan ikke fullt ut begripes gjennom produkters ideologiske og sosioøkonomiske funksjoner og sirkulasjoner. For bedre å forstå hvordan design påvirker forbruk må vi åpne opp «den sorte boksen» som produktet fremstår som, og grave under dets forførende overflater. Vi må studere de økologiske egenskapene til de materialer som produktet består av, og hvilke sammenhenger disse inngår i. På denne måten gjør prosjektet det mulig å se hvordan design regulerer forbruk, ikke ved salgspunktet, men ved opprinnelsespunktet: i gruvene, dagbruddene og brønnene som forsyner designere og produsenter med materialene som utgjør den industrialiserte verden med alle dens moderne bekvemmeligheter og begjærlige objekter.

This project examines how design regulates the consumption of extractive materials, and how this practice has changed over time in response to ideological shifts in the understanding of nature. Designing entails crucial decisions on which and how much materials to mine, blast, drill, excavate, or fell. This project will examine how these decisions regulate consumption, and how this under-appreciated aspect of the design process has changed from the second industrial revolution to the present. Given the scale to which the manufacturing industry has grown in order to satisfy our seemingly endless needs and desires, designing as an activity and a profession has decisive impact on ecological systems both locally and globally. Design is habitually cast as a catalyst of consumption, whether formulated as criticism or as promise. At the same time, design has long been seen as key in efforts to steer consumption in more desirable directions. In all these contexts, however, design is related to consumption through its manifestation as consumer products. But now that everything from genes to jeans is understood to be designed, the cultural significance and ecological impact of design can no longer adequately be gauged from the ideological and socio-economic functions and circulations of commodities. To better understand how design influences consumption, we need to open the black box that is the consumer product, dig beyond its shiny surfaces and mesmerizing interfaces and examine its constituent parts; the ecological properties and entanglements of the materials of which it is made. By doing so, this project will allow us to examine how design regulates consumption, not at the point of purchase, but at the point of origin: in the mines, quarries, and wells supplying designers and manufacturers with the extractive materials making up the industrialised world with all its modern conveniences and objects of desire.

Designing with/out Extractive Materials

Selv i Norge, et av de mer egalitære samfunnene i Europa, begrenser sosiale ulikheter i tidlig språkutvikling hos barn sterkt deres potensiale for senere suksess i utdanning og arbeidsliv. Derfor er det nødvendig med gode diagnostiske kartleggingsprøver for å oppdage og adressere disse ulikhetene tidlig. Progressive tester for tidlige språkferdigheter er det typiske måleinstrumentet som brukes til akkurat dette kartleggingsformålet. Dagens praksis for utforming av progressive tester er ikke god nok; Hvis vi vurderer at beslutninger tatt ved hjelp av disse testene kan ha en viss innvirkning på livet til medlemmer av ofte sårbare populasjoner (f.eks. små barn i faresonen), er det i verste fall direkte bekymringsfullt.

I dette prosjektet tar vi sikte på å gi et solid metodisk verktøysett som gjør det mulig å mer systematisk designe og validere progressive tester med formål om å legge til rette for det viktige arbeidet til utøvere innen utdanning, skolepsykologi og ortopedagogikk (PPT: pedagogisk-psykologisk tjeneste) som utfører diagnostiske kartlegging for utviklingsforsinkelser hos barn.

Even in Norway, one of the more egalitarian societies in Europe, social inequalities in the early language development of children heavily constrain their potential for later success in education and work life.  Hence, good diagnostic screening tests are needed to detect and address these inequalities early on. Progressive tests for early language skills are the typical measurement instrument used for this exact screening purpose. Current practice in design of progressive tests can be regarded as suboptimal at best and, if we consider that decisions made using these tests can have quite some impact on the life of members of often vulnerable populations (e.g., young kids at risk), outright worrying at worst. 

In this project, we aim to provide a solid toolkit that allows to more systematically design and validate progressive tests with the bigger goal of facilitating the important work of practitioners in the field of education, school psychology, and orthopedagogics that conduct the diagnostic screenings for developmental delays with children.

Screening Early and Adaptively for Language Skills

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the promotion of cultural and creative tourism activities, considering the different capacities, resources, and specificities (material, creative, human...) of the territories, as a mean to help with the sustainable development of peripheral rural areas, favoring job creation and population settlement. For this, the potential of its cultural heritage will be researched, taking into account both the artisan material culture (techniques, materials, patterns and decorative elements), as well as the intangible culture (music, oral knowledge and culinary traditions) as a resource.
 
To promote non-seasonal tourism as a form of sustainable development with a stable population settlement we are going to research the crafts linked to the territory and their implications, but we will also carry out a documentation of the productive processes. First and foremost, we are going to cater to the necessities of the local communities and pay attention to aspects related to societal groups at risk of exclusion, such as women, the elderly and the youth.

All this will be developed from a multidisciplinary perspective, for which we will count on the various teams —most of them linked to different countries— that will be part of the consortium. Each of these partners will contribute to the development, as well as to the final result of the project through input directly related to their area of ??expertise: for example, among the collaborators we have intellectual teams specialized in the digitalization of heritage, research, or communication and dissemination, as well as as various institutions that will act as a testing ground for the more practical parts of the proposal. However, if something will characterize our work, it will be the constant collaboration between all parties, as well as the exchange of advice and experiences that will help to enrich collective knowledge and guarantee optimal results.

Head - Research and Innovation

Together with Innovation Norway's office in New Delhi and the Research Council of Norway, we are now planning a commercial, research and innovation delegation visit to India 6.-10.2.17. The goal of this visit is to develop business and research cooperation with Indian energy industry and governmental organizations. One of the hosts for this visit is Powergrid of India, the world?s biggest grid company. Another company we will meet is Tata Power who visited us in Halden in July 2016. Tata Power will have to deploy 260 mill. smart meters in the near future and the company has a special interest for Norwegian technology for the energy sector. The reason why two Indian energy companies visited Norway and the NCE Smart Energy Markets cluster during summer 2016 was that they think that Norway has advanced technology that is of interest for the Indian energy sector.

Er jordens klima på vei mot å krysse farlige grenseverdier som kan forårsake smelting av det Grønlandske isdekket eller plutselige endringer i havsirkulasjonen («Golfstrømmen») som vil påvirke Norges klima? Ved hjelp av marine sedimentkjerner fra dyphavet hentet gjennom toktdeltagelse i International Ocean Discovery Program, og bruk av avanserte datamodeller, undersøkte THRESHOLDS-prosjektet endringer i klima og havsirkulasjon tilbake gjennom eldre varmeperioder for å finne bevis på slike terskler i klimasystemet. Resultatene avslører tydelig at i tidligere interglasiale varmeperioder, der hver var litt varmere enn i dag, skjedde det store reduksjoner i havsirkulasjonen og smelte av det Grønlandske isdekket.

Basert på en rekke tidligere studier som rekonstruerte sakte endringer i havsirkulasjonen, for eksempel de som varte i tusenvis av år, konkluderte forskerne med at havsirkulasjonen var sterk og stabil i yngre geologiske perioder som var like varme eller til og med varmere enn i dag. Imidlertid hadde nesten ingen studert endringer i havsirkulasjonen som opptrer over kortere tidsrom, for eksempel århundrer eller enda kortere, for å se om havsirkulasjonen kan reagerer så hurtig. Dette er viktige studier, siden hurtige endringer i havsirkulasjonen påvirker klima, havnivå, matproduksjon og opptak av karbon i havet og vil ha store innvirkninger på våre samfunn.
For å svare på dette spørsmålet undersøkte THRESHOLD unike arkiv fra havbunnen utenfor Grønland der marin leire er avsatt mange ganger raskere enn i andre områder. Sedimentavsetningene på havbunnen ligger som en båndopptaker som har lagret millioner av år med klimainformasjon. Ved å analysere tusenvis av sedimentprøver fra disse områdene fant vi at det hadde skjedd store forandringer i bunnstrømmene i Atlanterhavet  i hver klimaperiode som var varmere enn i dag i løpet av de siste halve million årene. Disse endringene indikerer at slike raske reduksjoner i havsirkulasjonen var mye mer vanlig enn tidligere forutsagt og at de konsekvent opptrer når temperaturen i Nord-Atlanteren overskrider dagens nivå.
Ved å bruke avanserte modelleringsverktøy kunne vi bekrefte at endringer i havsirkulasjonen gjennom de siste interglasiale periodene påvirket de biogeokjemiske egenskapene til de indre vannmasse i Nord-Atlanteren på samme måte som signalene rekonstruert fra de marine sedimenter. Men til tross for denne samvariasjonen mellom havsirkulasjon og dypvannets biogeokjemi, fant vi at forholdet mellom styrken på dypvannsdannelse og de proksyene (d13C) som ble brukt til å rekonstruere sirkulasjon i havet er sammensatt. Vår modell antyder at utbredelse av sjøis i de Nordiske hav er en viktig pacemaker for Atlanterhavets sirkulasjon og derfor for klimavariabilitet. Forskere som benytter klimamodeller vil dra fordel av dette omfattende paleoklimatiske observasjonsstudie som spenner over perioder med ulik klimaendring og klimapådriv. Globalt, er det påvist at elder klimainduserte endringer i dypvannssirkulasjonen påvirket havets kapasitet til å binde karbon. Våre funn viser derfor behovet for å også vurdere sakte sirkulasjon-karbon tilbakekoblinger (utover IPCC-tidsperioden 2100) når vi vurderer havets fremtidige evne til å ta opp karbon. 

Temperaturrekonstruksjonene fra Nord Atlanteren avdekket også at vi raskt nærmer oss klimaterskelen for smelting av det Grønlandske isdekket. Resultatene fra THRESHOLD viser at bare mindre mengder oppvarming fra dagens klima var nok til å smelte mye av isen under tidligere varme klimaperioder. Ved å bruke disse virkelighetsnære begrensningene viser vi at den faktiske terskelen for nedsmelting av isdekket kan være i den nedre skala av det som tidligere er forutsagt i klimamodeller, og at nedsmeltingen snart kan bli en uunngåelig konsekvens av våre menneskelige aktiviteter.

Thermohaline circulation (THC) variability impacts regional climate and its potential predictability. While THC is thought to be relatively vigorous and stable during interglacial periods models forecast significant changes by 2100 A.D..  In addition, the latest highly-resolved proxy reconstructions suggest that large centennial-scale variability could have occurred in the past when conditions were warmer than present; challenging the notion of interglacial THC stability inferred from lower resolution records. We will generate the first high-resolution proxy reconstructions of ocean state variables for characterizing the (sub)centennial scale behavior of deep ocean circulation during late Pleistocene interglacials.  These records spanning the most recent examples of warm(er) conditions will constrain the climate-ocean system behavior under a range of boundary conditions including many found in simulations of future climate, such as warmer/fresher surface ocean conditions, increased regional radiative forcing, reduced sea ice, and rapid Greenland Ice Sheet retreat.  
Utilizing expanded sediment sequences recovered by IODP coring we will reconstruct past variations in the transport and properties of the lower branches of the THC.  We focus on two key locations in order to portray centennial-scale variability in both branches of the Nordic Seas overflows (DSOW and ISOW) contributing to North Atlantic Deep Water. We will use the same sediments to reconstruct hydrographic (SST and SSS) and cryospheric (IRD) changes in the subpolar gyre and North Atlantic and determine their phasing relative to deep ocean variability. Together, these constraints will provide a new empirical benchmark allowing us to elucidate the relationship between climate and THC and to identify hydrographic thresholds or triggers for past THC variability. Finally we will use model (ESM) experiments to explore the dynamics of past interglacial ocean-climate variability and its relevance for our future.

Thresholds for destabilizing thermohaline circulation and ocean carbon cycling in a warmer world.

FARLAB, (Fasilitet for avansert isotopforskning og overvåking av vær, klima og biogeokjemiske sykluser), er et moderne nasjonalt senter for analyser av lette stabile isotoper. Vi gjør den nyeste teknologien og de beste metodene tilgjengelig for norske forskere fra ulike forskningsfelt.

Isotoper er ulike former av samme grunnstoff som kan gi unik innsikt i naturlige prosesser. Isotopsammensetningen av forskjellige materialer forteller oss om historien deres (Hvor kommer regnvann fra? Hvor mye karbondioksid er tatt opp i havet? Hvor varmt var det når et fossil levde?. Nye metoder og instrumenter gjør det mulig å måle nye sammensetninger av isotoper, og gir mulighet for å foreta målinger direkte i felten. Disse fremskrittene gir helt nye muligheter som for eksempel å rekonstruere jordas temperatur langt tilbake i tid eller for å studere hvordan vannet blir transportert i atmosfæren. Evnen til å analysere isotoper i felt er ikke bare mer effektiv, men tillater forskere å tilpasse eksperimenter og prøvetaking umiddelbart for å fange opp og forstå uventede eller spennende resultater etter hvert som de kommer inn.

FARLAB er en nasjonal infrastruktur som gjør disse teknikkene åpent tilgjengelig for norske forskere. FARLAB har bygget opp en kritisk masse av utstyr og kompetanse i Bergen som fungerer som en nasjonal ressurs for opplæring og analyser, både i felt og i laboratoriet. I tillegg samarbeider vi med internasjonale grupper for å videreutvikle de metoder vi bruker, så vel som for å standardisere feltanalyser mot "gullstandarden" i labanalyser.

Norway has developed internationally leading research in the field of (paleo)climate through the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR) together with strong climate and paleoclimate groups throughout Norway. 
 
The stable isotope laboratory at UiB was a founding laboratory of the Bjerknes Centre and isotopic tools are an integral part of paleoclimatic, oceanographic, geobiological, ecological, and carbon cycling research within Norway.
  
The recent development of new avenues and technologies in isotope geochemistry provides previously unobtainable data on past temperatures and water cycling (clumped isotopes), and unprecedented spatial and temporal coverage of water isotope monitoring through field based analyses (laser spectroscopy). These groundbreaking advances furthermore provide crucial data for validating global climate and weather prediction models.

FARLAB will establish these, and other, new methodologies to meet demand from top flight research Centres in Earth Sciences Norway (e.g CoE's CAGE, CEED, CGB, BCCR). This follows up on the RCN's recent Earth Science Evaluation Report highlighting the need to support the continued development and innovation capacity of top research groups.  

The new clumped isotope, laser spectroscopy,  small sample C and N isotope, and O and H  pyrolysis capabilities will have broad user groups and applications and will bring Norway to the forefront of isotope geochemistry.  In addition, FARLAB will take an internationally leading role in improving and expanding the applicability of these emerging techniques through method development for minimizing sample requirements (clumped isotopes) and improving the calibration of off-the-shelf spectrometers (laser spectroscopy).
  
FARLAB will build a critical mass of isotope equipment and expertise within Bergen and act as a national resource for training, standardization, and both field and laboratory based analyses.

FARLAB (facility for advanced isotopic research and monitoring of weather, climate, and biogeochemical cycling)

This application seeks support for a 12 month research stay for Ulysses Ninnemann at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO).  The goal of the research stay is to transform our ability to characterize the timing and spatial imprint of rapid climate and oc ean changes in the past.  Utilizing our unique set of marine sediment archives and analytical capabilities at UoB, I (together with my students and European collaborators) have produced an array of unique marine proxy records from the high latitudes of bo th hemispheres as part of the EU FW7 THOR and Past4Future projects.  The emerging records are exceptional for their ability to 1) capture key elements of ocean-climate system never before described or resolved in such detail (e.g. our 2004 and 2008 Scienc e papers) and 2) depict climate-ocean changes on (sub)decadal timescales revealing greater variability during warm times than previously appreciated (e.g. Euler and Ninnemann, Geology 2010).   While these records provide novel insights into the timing and  mechanics of past climate change in individual regions, they provide neither the spatial coverage nor the temporal constraints necessary in order to truly understand the origins and global evolution of climate change.
The main purpose of this stay will b e to collaborate with two groups at LDEO who are doing similar cutting edge work on distinctly different archives and are developing novel approaches to dating that are applicable to our archives as well. Joining and synthesizing the latest techniques and  results from both the leading European and U.S. efforts will place the Bergen and LDEO groups in a unique position to advance our understanding of climate-ocean coupling in the past on the timescales, and during the periods, most relevant for improving p redictions of future climate changes. Ultimately, this work will transfer the latest techniques to UoB and will set the stage for future UoB-LDEO collaborations addressing climate change over a range of timescale.

Resolving the Ocean's Role in Rapid Climate Variability

This application seeks support for a 5 month stay for Christine Euler (a PhD student) to achieve multielemental ratio analyses of planktonic foraminifera using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).  These analyses will employ a new method ological approach allowing extremely small samples to be analyzed.  This novel method, pioneered by Dr. Thomas Marchitto Jr. at UC Boulder, is not yet employed at UiB due to a lack of in house expertise.  The results will constitute an essential component  of Eulers PhD project and the knowledge and analytical skills acquired will allow the establishment of these techniques in house at UiB for future studies.   
    This collaboration will utilize a sedimentary sequence from the Chilean margin (ODP Site 12 33) with extremely high sedimentation rates that is unique for its ability to portray decadal to centennial scale changes in climate and ocean properties through the last glacial cycle. The terrigenous fluxes which maintain the high sedimentation rates an d allow such temporal fidelity to be achieved at this location also dilute the foraminfera used for geochemical and isotopic analyses.  Thus, many samples lack sufficient foraminifera for standard analytical techniques?preventing the full potential of thi s archive from being realized. The ICP-MS at UC is capable of precisely measuring numerous elemental ratios simultaneously down to extremely small sample sizes. The multielemental ratio analyses from this core will be used to investigate the environmental  variability over a thousand year long period during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) at ~7yr resolution.  In particular, the Mg/Ca records generated will allow the paleo-temperatures of both the surface and intermediate ocean to be reconstructed.  These re sults will provide valuable new constraints for assessing the role of the Southern Hemisphere extratropical ocean and Antarctic Intermediate water in climate change on decadal to centennial timescales.

ICP-MS multielement ratios of foraminifera from the Southeast Pacific to reconstruct oceanographic conditions during last glacial maximum

Paleodrake requests support to recover cores at marine sites in order to portray the decadal-millennial scale climate and ocean variability in the Drake Passage region of Antarctica through the Holocene and the last glacial period.  These records will ult imately provide the quantitative reconstructions necessary to first define the magnitude and expression of natural climate variability in the region, and then to clarify the nature of its coupling to changes in Antarctic water mass properties and circumpo lar circulation.  
The key topographic constraint on circumpolar circulation, the Drake Passage, is hypothesized to influence global water mass distributions and overturning rates.  Consequently, any assessment of the ocean's relationship to climate ultim ately requires constraints from this region. Furthermore, our proposed marine sites provide the geographic complement to Antarctic ice core records necessary for characterizing the spatial expression of natural climate variability and identifying its orig in. The results will provide the necessary perspective for contextualizing the significance of recent trends in polar climate observed in the Southern Annular Mode and upper to deep ocean properties, relative to the magnitude of their low frequency variab ility in the past.   
Paleodrake is designed to capitalize on the window of opportunity presented by the presence of the G.O.Sars in the Southern Ocean as part of IPY.

Paleoceanagraphic and climatic variability on decadal to millennial timescales across the Drake Passage

Here we propose a Norwegian contribution to an international campaign to recover a number of long, large-volume, sediment cores between 45-55°S along the Chilean continental margin. We request support to survey and core five sites spanning the westerly wi nd belt and intersecting the flow path of southeast Pacific intermediate and mode waters.  The extremely high sedimentation rates along the southern Chilean shelf and slope provide the rare opportunity to recover sediments containing paleoenvironmental hi stories with (sub) decadal resolution spanning the Holocene and late glacial periods. Such records are necessary to provide sorely needed southern hemisphere constraints on the magnitude, modes, and origins of natural climate variability in the past on mu lti-decadal to millennial timescales.  In particular, we propose to target sediment sequences capable of portraying 1) changes in continental climate (rainfall) and the latitudinal position of the westerly winds, 2) variability in newly ventilated pacific  thermocline to intermediate water properties and their coupling to surface ocean-atmospheric conditions, and 3) Southern Hemisphere natural climate variability on decadal to millennial timescales through the Holocene and Last Glacial Maximum. 
The timing  of this initiative is designed to capitalize on the window of opportunity presented by the current international investments toward an International Marine Global change Study (IMAGES) coring expedition on the RV Marion Dufresne.  The unique capabilities  of this vessel, to recover wide diameter cores over 60 meters in length, are ideally suited to these high depositional rate environments where conventional coring techniques cannot penetrate beyond the last few thousand years.  This cruise marks the culm ination of over 4 years of planning by the Southern Ocean IMAGES working group and is highlighted as a priority plan within the IMAGES Consortium for CALYPSO coring (IC3). This proposal seeks support to develop an ultra high resolution, benthic foraminiferal oxygen isotope record for the last 75 kyr in order to provide independent chronologic constraints for magnetic field secular variation and paleointensity records genera ted in the same sediments. Despite their proven utility, foraminiferal <.delta><sup>18</sup>O records cannot be generated in many sequences that contain invaluable paleoenvironmental archives (e.g. lacustrine sediments). Fortunately, many of these same se diments are excellent records of geomagnetic field variability. Recent work on sediment paleointensity suggest that paleomagnetic field intensity variations may provide a valuable tool for global correlation and chronostratigraphy down to millennial timescales. Unfortunately, very few ultra high sedimentation rate sit es exist where both isotopic and paleomagnetic records can be generated. Utilizing a remarkable sediment sequences recently cored by ODP (Site 1233) we now have the unique opportunity to anchor some of the highest resolution records of paleomagnetic field behaviour ever realized in the Southern Hemisphere using a marine oxygen  isotope and carbon dated chronology. The outcome will be a reference record which can be used for regional and global correlation. Ultimately this work sets the foundation for improving our understanding of the timing and rate of geologic, and environmental changes in the past.
