Conference on Diversity in Nordic Literature (DINO)

Tildelt: kr 96 037

DINO (Diversity in Nordic Literature) is a network and biannual conference series that was established in 2009 to bring together researchers and doctoral students to discuss and develop Nordic research on literature and diversity. In an age of globalization we question hegemonic notions of national and regional identities. Our focus is on multiculturalism, multilingualism, and non-heterosexual positions from which notions of Nordic identities may be questioned and negotiated. By 2014 the group counted 100 members from the Nordic countries. Previous conferences have been held in Helsinki, Tromsø, Uppsala, Guovdageaidnu, and Åbo. The sixth conference in the series is planned to take place in Oslo Oct./Nov. 2018. The conference will highlight research on affect, especially guilt and shame, as it pertains to living privileged Nordic lives. The guilt and shame may experienced vis-a-vis less privileged global Others whose labor and resources are exploited so that Scandinavians may maintain their standard of living. Included in this perspective is climate-guilt/eco-guilt tied, in many cases, to consumer-guilt. At the same time we will also explore affect (guilt and shame) experienced within the Nordic region as not all Nordic people live equally privileged lives. Our attention is drawn to minority groups experiencing various forms of shaming within the North, whether they are made to feel ashamed of their racial, ethnic, linguistic, or sexual background and orientation (ablebodiedness may likewise be an issue). Finally, we also focus on past and present colonial relations. The conference invites contributions from different and diverse fields of enquiry, including postcolonialism, critical race and whiteness studies, disability studies, queer studies, gender studies, eco criticism, and affect studies.
