The overall aim of the proposed PYRAMIDION project is to develop and demonstrate an international ID registry for domestic animals, their vaccine history, health status and address. Domestic animals need a 'pet passport' to travel in the EU. PYRAMIDION will be the foundation of a pan-European electronic passport for domestic animals. The data can be used by vets and public agencies authorised to issue hardcopy pet passports. PYRAMIDION can also be accessed at border control points to verify hardcopy passports for pets in transport within the EU. In the longer term, we intend that PYRAMIDION will completely replace hardcopy pet passports and other certificates used in animal transportation.
In order to successfully develop our technology, we have a number of challenges and barriers to overcome. This will be achieved through the novel developments pushing us beyond current commercial products and scientific state-of-the-art:
1. Adapting and expanding the cloud architecture where the registration and biometric data is archived. The archive must accommodate multiple data formats (numerical, text, medical, genetic).
2. Identifying the most common diagnoses and treatments for domestic animals, and converting them to a simple code for simple archiving in PYRAMIDION and smooth searching.
3. Developing a user access gateway that distinguishes between users who are permitted to add new and revise existing data, and those who have only 'read only' privileges.
4. Developing a functionality that demonstrates full compliance with animal health and vaccination legislation, and which is acceptable to public authorities and auditors.
5. Developing an API that integrates PYRAMIDION with the most common and widely used clinical workflow software in veterinary clinics.
6. Developing analytical tools that can search across different data formats and different individuals held in PYRAMIDION.
7. Test the system in multiple veterinary clinics across Europe.
