Kongsvegen Glacier Surge Dynamics

Tildelt: kr 52 888

A major uncertainty in the contribution of glaciers to sea level rise is the role of glacier dynamics, and is particularly complicated for surge-type glaciers, where even the primary controls on glacier motion are poorly understood. This project aims to improve the understanding of glacier dynamics through a detailed study of Kongsvegen as it begins entering an active surge phase for the first time since 1948. This will include the deployment of a network of GPS units, time-lapse cameras and weather stations. This project is significant to the local population due to difficulties in ground/water transportation connected with surges, and contributes to the SSF flagship of glaciology in Kongsfjorden.
