SOIL-WATER influence on Trace Elements and Organic Matter in River Water in Arctic (RIS-ID: 10962)

Tildelt: kr 19 299

This master project has the objective to study soil-water influence on the trace elements and natural organic matter in Bayelva river in the Ny-Ålesund Svalbard. This to better understand and explain the fate of possible accumulated trace metals in the organic soil layer as well as influence of the mineral soil. From previous studies of soil samples in the area, mercury and other typical air deposited trace metals is found to be typical 3 to 5 time enriched in the organic soil layer compare to the mineral soil, so the organic soil might well be a source for leakage to the water phase. To explore the stability of these elements in the soil, and possible mobilization processes, this project will in particular study compositions of and influence of water infiltrating the soil phase in the catchment area of Bayelva. Obtained results will be important to understand the fate of air deposited elements like mercury on the snow during the winter time, and if such elements most likely will accumulate in soil phase or follow the water phase (with possible accumulation in sea-, marine biota or marine sediments)
