13-14 June 2019, University of Bergen and the Norwegian China Law Centre will host the 14th Biennial conference of the Nordic Association for China Studies (NACS). The conference will bring together junior and senior scholars from the Nordic countries and beyond who have a shared interest in studying Chinese society and culture. Three prominent scholars from across the world will join the conference as keynote speakers: Professor Jane Duckett of Glasgow University (confirmed); Professor Li Wei of University College London (confirmed) and Associate Professor Liu Yu of Tsinghua University (to be confirmed). The conference will take a broad and multifaceted perspective to address China's ambiguous engagement with the world. While China integrates itself more deeply into the global system, it, on the one hand, strives to have a bigger stake in shaping the international system and in formulating the game rules, but on the other hand, it also wishes to assert its distinction more forcefully. During the two-day interdisciplinary conference, participants are encouraged to take a nuanced view when contemplating various challenges to China's maintenance of identity amidst its rapid rise to prominence. The main target group for the conference is scholars, students and teachers working in Nordic countries; however, participants based in other countries (China and elsewhere) are also welcome. We will also send special invitations to China scholars from three Baltic countries. The biannual conference serves as an important window to display academic output produced by researchers from Nordic countries thus to boost their international profile. Traditionally, the conferences welcome PhD and Master students in particular, providing an opportunity for young scholars to present their research, gain insight into cutting-edge research, and establish personal connections with peers and more established researchers. The number of participants is expected to be 80-100 persons.
