Collaboration Network for Excellent Education and Research in Dependable and Secure Distributed Systems

Samarbeidsnettverket for fremragende utdanning og forskning innenfor pålitelige og sikre distribuerte systemer (CREDENCE) tar sikte på å utvikle og utvide eksisterende samarbeid i forskning og høyere utdanning mellom flere partnere fra Brasil, Canada, USA og Norge. Partnerskapet omfatter forskning fokusert på både tekniske og sosio-tekniske aspekter av pålitelige og sikre datasystemer, med særlig vekt på teknologier som blokkjeder. Spesifikke aktiviteter inkluderer organisering av workshops og sommerskoler, utvikling av ny og forbedret læreplan for avanserte kurs innenfor banebrytende teknologi, forskningssamarbeid på masteroppgaver, felles veiledning av PhD studenter, samt personellmobilitet for både forskning og utdanning. Dette partnerskapet vil gjøre det mulig for forskergruppene på UiS og UiO å forbedre kvaliteten og effektiviteten til forskningen og forskerutdanningen både på master- og PhD-nivå. Videre vil CREDENCE-partnerskapet muliggjøre et institusjonelt samarbeid utover eksisterende personlige forbindelser, noe som vil bidra til forbedret kvalitet og omfang av forskning og utdanning. I løpet av prosjektperioden ble det gjennomført flere korte opphold av prosjektpartnerne samt en fire-dagers workshop. Workshopen ble holdt i Stavanger i august med deltakere fra alle prosjektpartnere. Dette inkluderte presentasjoner, parallelle plakatøkter og breakout-økter for studentene der de presenterte samarbeidsprosjekter mens de øvrige deltakerne ga kommentarer og innspill. Temaene var hovedsakelig pålitelig og sikker databehandling. Under workshopen gjennomførte konsortiets ledere et prosjektmøte der de kartla aktivitetene for det neste året, spesielt planlegging av sommerskolen 2020 og mobilitetsutvekslinger. På grunn av COVID-19 situasjonen har mye av den planlagte aktiviteten for 2020 blitt utsatt til 2021 og 2022. I 2021, som en erstatning for planlagt mobilitetsutveksling, har vi utviklet kursmateriale i form av høykvalitets videoforelesninger. Vi planlegger flere mobilitetsutvekslinger i 2022. Vi har utsatt sommerskolen og planlegger denne i 2022 som en fysisk skole i New York City. Our collaboration network includes renowned academic partners from Brazil, Canada and the US, with female PIs from 50% of the partner institutions. The project is aligned with Brazil's strategy for research in security and dependability. It is poised to serve as an important catalyst for Brazil's efforts in this direction. The proposal encompasses institutionalized collaboration with partners such as McGill (Canada) and Cornell (US), known for their excellence in research and education. While the consortium is primarily technological, some PIs specialize in socio-technical systems. Thus, the project serves as a bridge between technology and social sciences. The collaboration will strengthen the research projects and strategic initiatives at both UiS and UiO by technologically advancing design and validation of security- and reliability-critical distributed systems such as smart homes and cities, cloud computing, smart energy and cryptocurrency systems. The partners have collaborated in the past on individual research activities. The partnership, if funded, will allow us to build a systematic and institutionalized collaborative network, and will bolster the quality of research and education in the associated projects. Activities planned: (a) workshop and summer school, (b) mutual research visits, including by PhD students, (c) development of courses and tutorials, and (d) joint research collaboration, resulting in publications involving PhD students. In terms of education, the partnership will enhance the curricula in dependable distributed systems at each partner institution by means of complementary expertise, mutual guest lectures, student mobility, joint student projects and remote lecturing. Several PIs got best teaching awards. In terms of research, mobility, joint projects and joint supervision of graduate students will give a boost in quality, beyond what is currently attainable through the existing projects.
