The 13th Nordic Conference on the Application of Scientific Methods in Archaeology (SMIA)

Tildelt: kr 93 128

The last two decades have seen broad technological advancements in archaeo-science. The availability of methods and technologies has expanded our ability to address hitherto unanswerable questions in the archaeological record. This generates levels of data and knowledge previously unattainable. Cooperation and communication between scientists and archaeologists are vital in order to solve or agree on questions of representation, contexts, statistics, or other source critical aspects before the results enter stories of human lives. Inter-disciplinary studies have the potential to develop new knowledge of past societies. We will thus encourage discussions of how to mediate knowledge generated from both the humanistic and natural sciences within a single project, and whether methods from different fields play to each other’s strengths, or if some are more appropriate than others. Hence, papers that implement, mediate and comments on the potential, or perhaps problematic aspects, of using scientific data to shed light on past human behaviour are prioritised. That is, we seek to explore the application of data that substantiate theories of mobility, exchange, production, human and material biographies, and networks/relations as well as those which seek to explain “irrational” behaviour (i.e. the human factor). New scientific data sometimes give unexpected results too. The energy, and synergy, that is created when scientific data clash with archaeological convention can be transformed into new questions and insights. Thus, after two days of papers, a set program of parallel roundtable discussions and workshops will provide fora for further discussions on the interdisciplinarity that archaeological science and interpretations entails. Hence, a final aim is to improve knowledge of methods, to enable the participants to better assess studies where these have been used, to interpret and build on the data correctly, and in the case of pXRF, how to apply the method.
