Dyrearter over hele verden har endret atferd og migrasjonsmønstre som respons på klimaendringer, og globalt opplever vi en økning i tap av biologisk mangfold. Flaggermus utgjør den nest største pattedyrordenen i verden. Likevel vet vi fremdeles relativt lite om hvordan individer og populasjoner påvirkes av klimaendringer. Flaggermus har lav reproduksjonsrate og trenger mye mat relativt til den beskjedne kroppsstørrelsen. Forskere antar derfor at flaggermus er spesielt følsomme for klimaendringer. For å kunne gi gode råd om forvaltning og bevaring, må vi først vite hvilke egenskaper som gjør en flaggermusart mer sårbar, og hvilke årstider som gir dem de største utfordringene ved nordlige breddegrader; selv om vinteren i nord er lang og kald kan sommeren vise seg å være en større utfordring for nattaktive dyr, med lyse og korte sommernetter som begrenser tiden flaggermus har til å finne mat. Gjennom dette prosjektet prøver vi å finne ut hva som driver atferdsmessige, fysiologiske, eller sesongmessige responser på klimaendringer hos nordiske flaggermus fra sør til nord i Fennoskandia. Vi forsøker også å identifisere mulige tidsperioder som reduserer overlevelse hos nordiske flaggermus i lys av fremtidige klima-scenarioer, der hver årstid har sine egne dilemmaer små flaggermus må overvinne for å overleve. Dette prosjektet er et teoretisk modelleringsprosjekt, og et 3-årig forskningssamarbeid mellom BatLab Norway (NMBU) og BatLab Finland (universitetet i Helsinki).

Climate change will continue to alter weather conditions, food webs and energy requirements for species globally over the next decades, with escalating rates of warming especially predicted in the north. Bats belong to the second most species-rich mammal group in the world and are believed to be particularly sensitive to future climate change; however, we still have little knowledge on the mechanisms behind behavioral, physiological, and phenological responses to climate change in bats.

Nordic bats live in seasonal environments and face particular energetic dilemmas each season, that ultimately impact their survival- or reproductive chances. Common for these energetic dilemmas is that Nordic bats can use energy-saving behaviours (torpor and hibernation) throughout the annual cycle, but face certain costs in return. However, the costs and benefits of using these behaviours depend on individual state and on current and future environmental conditions, which demands a certain level of environmental predictability in order for bats to optimise their decisions.

With prospects of the weather becoming more unpredictable in the north, it has never been more urgent to identify potential bottlenecks for species living close to the border of their distribution limits, and to identify the traits that make them vulnerable to climate change.

In this project I will use stochastic dynamic state-dependent optimization models to identify the mechanisms behind responses to climate change in different Nordic bat species across seasons and latitudes. Such models evaluate costs and benefits of different behaviors, calculates the optimal decision under various conditions, and predicts the consequences of each choice, finally allowing us to simulate long-term population survival.

By combining the expertise of BatLab Finland and BatLab Norway I will be able to detect the seasonal limitations for survival and reproduction in Nordic bats across a latitudinal gradient.

Vulnerability of Nordic bat species to climate change: identifying seasonal bottlenecks across latitudes (NordBats)

Målet for FUSE er å utvikle kunnskap og metoder for energieffektive og trygge skipsoperasjoner ved å kombinere KI og skips hydrodynamikk som muliggjør raske utslippsreduksjoner fra den globale flåten gjennom neste generasjons ruteoptimalisering.


Hovedideen er å utvikle metoder for mer nøyaktige numeriske modeller for skipsytelse, inkludert både energi- og bevegelsesegenskaper, ved å bruke kunstig intelligens i kombinasjon med klassisk hydrodynamikk. Tradisjonelle hydrodynamiske modeller er basert på grunnprinsipper og reflekterer fysiske lover. Kunstig intelligens kan trenes på operasjonelle data til å finne nye sammenhenger i dataene utover det man vet fra fysikkens lover. Begge tilnærmingene har sine fordeler og ulemper, og vi tar sikte på å kombinere det beste fra begge tilnærmingene og utvikle hybridmodeller. 
Potensielle effekter av de nye skipsmodellene vil evalueres gjennom bruk i ruteplanlegging.

Som utgangspunkt vil vi samle brukerkrav fra industripartnerne med fokus på to utvalgte brukstilfeller; deep sea og fergedrift. Forskningsaktivitetene vil dekke dataanalyse, KI og skipshydrodynamikk og reiseoptimalisering og beslutningsstøtte. Relevante forskningstemaer innebærer å sammenligne de ulike tilnærmingene for å estimere skipsytelse, vurdere nøyaktighet og gyldig bruk av modellene og evaluering av modellenes sensitivitet og anvendelighet. Til slutt vil den potensielle effekten av å bruke hybridmodeller i reiseoptimalisering bli undersøkt og demonstrert. En ph.d.-kandidat vil bli utdannet fra NTNU med fokus på å fusjonere KI med skipshydrodynamikk. 

Prosjektpartnerne er SINTEF Ocean, SINTEF Ålesund, NTNU, Torghatten, Vard Electro, NAVTOR og G2 Ocean.

The FUSE vision is to rapidly reduce emissions from the global fleet by unlocking the full potential of operational data through fusing AI and ship hydrodynamics for next generation voyage optimization. The main idea is to develop theoretical approaches and methodology utilizing the potential of using AI in combination with classical hydrodynamics to develop more accurate numerical models for ship performance, including both energy and motion characteristics. Traditional hydrodynamic models are based on first-principle, reflecting physical laws. AI-based models which uses operational data are used to establish a statistical relationship between inputs and outputs. Both approaches have their pros and cons, and we aim to fuse the best of both approaches and develop hybrid models as input to voyage planning and onboard decision support systems.  As a starting point, we will gather user requirements from the industrial partners focusing on two selected use cases; deepsea and ferry operations. The industry partners will be involved during the whole project period ensuring that the competence and results can be exploited into their product and services. The industry partners will contribute with operational data from their ships as research data. 

The research activities will cover data analytics, AI and ship hydrodynamics and voyage optimization and decision support. Research partners are SINTEF Ocean, SINTEF Ålesund, and NTNU. A PhD candidate will be educated from the NTNU with supervisors from Marine Technology and Engineering Cybernetics with focus on fusing AI with ship hydrodynamics. Relevant research topics involve comparing the different approaches for estimating ship performance, considering accuracies and valid usage of the models and evaluation of sensitivity and applicability of the models. Finally, the potential impact of using hybrid models in voyage optimization will be investigated and demonstrated.

Fusing AI and Ship Hydrodynamics for Next-Gen Voyage Optimization

Utviklingen av havvind er et viktig element i det grønne skiftet og det forventes å ekspandere betraktelig, også i områder med sjøis i særdeleshet Østersjøen. Her er relativt grunt vann slik at det i hovedsak planlegges og bygges bunnfaste konstruksjoner. EU har mål om å produsere 60GW fra havvind før 2030, og mye av dette vil komme i Østersjøen. Tekniske løsninger for havvind er viktig ikke bare for EU, men svarer også på minst tre av FNs 13 bærekraftmål ((#7, #9, #13) og vil ha indirekte positiv effekt i forhold til fem andre ( (#3, #8, #9, #11 and #12).
Sjøis og is-krefter fra sjøis på havvindsinstallasjoner representerer en av de største usikkerhetene for design og operasjon av havvindsturbiner. De eksisterende standarder og retningslinjer er hovedsakelig gitt i IEC614000-3-1 and DNV-ST-0437, og disse er stort sett basert på "Arctic Offshore structures for the petroleum industry" i ISO19906. Det er to vesentlige forskjeller mellom installasjoner for havvind og for olje og gass. For det første er oljeplattformer større, stivere responderer mye mer statisk, mens vindturbiner er slankere og mer dynamiske. For det andre kan man vanlig vis i Arktis regne med tilnærmet uendelig store drivende krefter fra tung is, men i Østersjøen (og andre områder hvor det planlegges havvind) er det lettere isforhold (isen er mellom 0.3 m og 1.2 m), og de drivende kreftene (fra særlig vind og strøm) kan begrense is-kreftene. Usikkerhetene ligger både i etablering av fordelinger av, og korrelasjoner mellom de relevante is-parameterne (is-tykkelse, konsentrasjon osv.) og i de deterministiske og probabilistiske modeller for å beregne laster og respons. IceWise kommer til å adresse begge disse.

IceWise addresses sea ice actions on offshore wind turbines. Offshore wind is one of the vital renewable energies for the future and Europe wants to reach at least 60 GW installed in EU waters by 2030. This means more wind turbines in the Baltic sea where sea ice is on the the major uncertainties.

IceWise combines the competence of NTNU in ice mechanics and ice actions on offshore structures with competence within satellite remote sensing of sea ice at UiT to carry out world-leading research needed for Norwegian industry to reduce uncertainty in ice action estimations and to pave the way for improved operational planning and standardization of design method for offshore wind turbines.

WP1 Sea ice statistics, WP2 Ice state definition and WP3 Probabilistic modelling, address respectively the sea ice statistics and ridges statistics from satellite remote sensing data (WP1), defining an ice state based on multi-modal data product and calculate deterministic ice loads (WP2) and probabilistic modelling of ice ridge and level ice action (WP3).
The international  DTU-Space (Skourup) will co-supervise the PhD in WP1 (UiT) and we plan for with two full day scientific workshops per year (at NTNU and at Aalto) with the researchers and the PhDs.

Scientific papers published in high level international journals, high qualified personnel (PhD and master students) available for employment in Norwegian industry and development of better standards and guidelines for estimating ice actions on bottom-fixed wind turbines are three major results from the project.

A steering committee with member from all Norwegian partners will meet 4 times per year and ensure good progress. it will also be two full day physical workshop with all partners annually. The PhD students will meet and be challenged by the industry with their applied perspective.

DNV will be invited as observer to IceWise and Høyland is reviewing the new DNV-RP-C205 about ice actions to ensure that IceWise is complementary.

Ice, Wind and Structures

I Nordsjøen finnes det organisk rike leirlag som har blitt begravd til flere kilometers dyp. Når slike leirlag blir begravd til flere kilometers dyp, blir de så varme at de begynner å generere olje og gass. Av all oljen og gassen som har blitt generert i Nordsjøen, har hele 98% lekket ut til havet over geologisk tid. Men hvor skjer dette? Hvor mye lekker ut? Hvilke miljøkonsekvenser har det? Hvordan påvirker det planer for CO2-lagring at væsker kan sive ut naturlig noen steder? Og kan det gi ny innsikt i hvor man bør lete etter olje og gass? Dette er spørsmål som InFluSe-prosjektet skal svare på. 

InFluSe står for "Integrated study of Fluid Migration and Seepage in the Southern Norwegian North Sea - Impact on Hydrocarbons, Environment, and CO2 storage". På grunn av de viktige konsekvensene hydrokarbonlekkasje i Nordsjøen har, er det mange som er interessert i dette prosjektet. Prosjektet ledes av Universitetet i Bergen, og har partnere fra industri, akademia og statsadminstrasjon, og disse partnerene inkluderer UiT, Equnior, Vår Energi, AkerBP, Aarhus Universitet, Geomar Kiel, Havforskningsinstituttet og Sokkeldirektoratet. 

I løpet av det første av fire år, skal vi ansette fire PhD-kandidater og gjennomføre et tokt på 20 dager med forskningsskipet G.O. Sars. Den første av PhD-stipendiatene skal bruke satellittdata til å undersøke hvor, når og hvorfor olje lekker i Nordsjøen. Den andre PhDen skal undersøke eksisterende brønn-, kjerne- og seismikk-data fra Nordsjøen for å finne ut hvilke veier hydrokarbonene migrerer under bakken. Den tredje skal samle inn og prosessere nye høy-oppløselige 3D-seismiske data over områder med mye lekkasje for å undersøke hvordan hydrokarbonene kommer seg gjennom takbergartene. Den siste skal undersøke geokjemiske og biologiske prøver fra hydrokarbonoppkommene for å finne ut hvor de kommer fra, hvor lenge de har vert aktive, og hvilke påvirkninger de har på miljøet.

In the Southern Norwegian North Sea (SNNS), analysis of satellite radar data supported by recent scientific cruise activity reveals a previously unknown pattern of natural oil seepage. This seepage pattern indicates the presence of a widespread and previously unknown hydrocarbon migration system. Combined with the extreme availability of subsurface data in the study area and our ability to conduct scientific cruises with state-of-the-art research vessels, the observed seepage pattern makes it possible to characterize and understand migration of fluids in sedimentary basins from source to seep, at a hitherto unparalleled level of detail. Through an integrated and cross-disciplinary research program, the InFluSe project partners will create a complete understanding of hydrocarbon migration and seepage in the SNNS through two scientific cruises, a comprehensive analysis and modelling program, and education of 4 PhDs and >10 MScs in the disciplines of geomatics, subsurface geology, geophysics and geochemistry. Firstly, we will determine the hydrocarbon migration pathways in the SNNS area and develop a baseline of natural hydrocarbon seepage in terms of distribution and rates that past and potential future well-related emissions can be evaluated against. Secondly, improved knowledge about distribution and rates of hydrocarbon seeps in the Norwegian North Sea will make it possible to assess the geological contribution of hydrocarbons, carbon and methane (the most important greenhouse gas after CO2) to the environment and atmosphere, something that is poorly understood from both a conceptual and regional perspective, and may be exacerbated by the shallow depth of seepage here. Thirdly, several CO2 storage licenses are in place in the SNNS and the impact of the observed seepage on the CO2 storage integrity in these areas will be addressed by InFluSe. Finally, understanding of pathways of hydrocarbon migration will help improve play models and de-risk exploration prospects.

Integrated study of Fluid Migration and Seepage in the Southern Norwegian North Sea - Impact on Hydrocarbons, Environment, and CO2 storage

Karbon (CO2) fangst og lagring, CCS, mottar betydelig interesse på grunn av det presserende behovet for massiv dekarbonisering av industrisektorer, spesielt innen industrier med høye utslipp (sement, avfallsforbrenning, metallurgi, etc.). Løsemiddelbasert CO2-fangst har nådd kommersialiseringsstadiet, og akseptabel modenhet for industriell distribusjon. Men avhengighet av konvensjonelle kjeler øker basert på fossilt brensel for å levere det betydelige varmebehovet for regenerering av løsningsmiddel, energikostnadene og teknologiens CO2-intensitet, og hindrer dermed mulighetene for rask industriell distribusjon.

eC-Solv-teknologien er en revolusjonerende tilnærming utviklet av SINTEF for elektrifisering av løsemiddelbasert CO2-fangst.  Den erstatter den kjelbaserte energiforsyningen i disse systemene med en varmepumpe som gjenvinner varme som eksisterer i anlegget (adsorber/absorber, kompressorer, røykgass, etc.) og oppgraderer den for bruk i regenereringen av løsningsmiddelet. Vakuum påføres sammen med temperatursvingningen for å redusere temperaturforskjell mellom karbonatisering og regenerering, og dermed maksimere varmepumpens energieffektivitet.  Til tross for dets enkelhet og en enkel plug-and-play natur, påvirker konseptets tekniske implementering dimensjonering av prosesskolonner, driftstemperatur og trykk, og løsningsmiddel/sorbentvalg. Dette krever dermed en perfekt forståelse av den ikke-lineære interaksjonen mellom de forskjellige designaspektene. 

Prosjektet tar sikte på å tilpasse de teknologiske tekniske utsiktene til markedets voksende muligheter, og skape en sterk forretningsmodell for rask kommersialisering og industriell distribusjon.

ec-Solv Carbon Capture - Qualification Project

Novel vaccine platform for animal health

Samkjøring og bestillingstransport har et potensial til å revolusjonere transportsystemet i distriktene ved at kapasiteten i kjøretøyene utnyttes på en bedre måte. Dette bidrar til et mer miljøvennlig, mer økonomisk levedyktig og mer inkluderende transportsystem. 
Prosjektet vil gi kunnskap om og verktøy som skal stimulere til at tilbudet om samkjøring i kombinasjon med kollektivtransport kan utvides på en måte som kommer både brukerne og operatørene til nytte, samtidig som kostandene holdes nede. Det vil vi gjøre ved å studere tre ulike og innovative forretningsmodeller for samkjøring som testes i tre ulike regioner i Norge (Vestlandet, Trøndelag og Agder). Løsningene skiller seg fra tidligere samkjøringsløsninger på to måter: de er offentlig subsidiert, og de retter seg mot spredtbygdestrøk. 
Prosjektet har fem delmål: 
i)	få inngående kunnskap om hva som forklarer bruk/ikke bruk av samkjøring, 
ii)	få kunnskap om hvordan ulike samkjøringstjenester påvirker bilbruk, reiseatferd og tilgjengelighet, 
iii)	optimere rute- og frekvensplanleggingen for samkjøring i kombinasjon med offentlig transport for å forbedre den generelle mobiliteten og velferden til befolkningen i rurale områder, samt å redusere de eksterne kostnadene ved persontransport, 
iv)	identifisere barrierer og suksessfaktorer for oppskalering, og 
v)	å gi interessenter kunnskap og verktøy for å forsterke en oppskalering av samkjøring. 
For å nå disse målene vil vi bruke en blanding av metoder og data (f.eks. fokusgrupper, undersøkelser, geokodede brukerdata, arealbruksstatistikk). Ved å dra nytte av allerede innsamlede data vil vi utvikle panelstudier som vil gjøre det mulig for oss å måle og gi kunnskap om effekten av samkjøring på reiseatferd, utslipp og tilgjengelighet.
Kritiske interessenter er inkludert i prosjektet - alt fra kollektivtransportleverandører, samkjøringsselskaper til fylker- og kommuner - for å bygge bro mellom kunnskapsgenerering og praktiske anvendning.

On-demand ridesharing and shared mobility solutions increase vehicles occupancy and have the potential to revolutionize the transport system in rural areas, making it more environmentally friendly, more economically viable and more socially sustainable. This project will provide knowledge on and tools to stimulate a cost-effective upscaling of ridesharing in rural areas. We will do so by studying three different and innovative business models for ridesharing that are being piloted in three different regions of Norway (Vestlandet, Trøndelag and Agder). These solutions stand out from earlier ridesharing solutions in two ways: they are publicly subsidized, and they target rural areas. 

The overall objective is to stimulate a cost-effective upscaling of public subsidized ridesharing to facilitate a more efficient, sustainable and inclusive transport system in rural areas, by i) gain in-depth understanding on the mechanisms for adoption of ridesharing, ii) gain knowledge on how it impacts car use, travel behaviour and accessibility, iii) optimize ridesharing in tandem with rural public transport to improve the overall mobility and welfare of rural transport users, and reduce the external costs of passenger transport, iv) identify barriers and success factors for upscaling, and v) to provide stakeholders with resources and tools to amplify an upscaling of ridehsaring. This objective addresses the knowledge needs of the collaborative partners and knowledge gaps in the literature. Our project is tailored to reach this objective through a sound theoretical framework, integrated method design, unique data sets (paneldata with a treatment and reference group and user data with gps, combined with land use statistics), as well as qualitative data (e.g focus group interviews and workshops), and an interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral consortium, consisting of research institutes, universities and public sector actors.

Combining Public transit and Ride Sharing in rural Transport

Store skip (over 5000 bruttotonn), som containerskip, bulkskip og tankskip står for ca. 90% av karbondioksidutslippene (CO2) forårsaket av den maritime sektoren i dag. For denne typen fartøy er nullutslippsløsninger, som elektrifisering, ikke lett tilgjengelige. Det er derfor avgjørende å finne andre løsninger for å avkarbonisere dem. En ny teknologi spesielt egnet for store fartøyer, er moderne seil, kalt vindassisterte fremdriftssystemer (WAPS). WAPS har potensial til å redusere drivstofforbruket med opptil 60% og dermed redusere klimagassutslippene betydelig. 
For å realisere og maksimere potensialet til WAPS er det avgjørende å ha en grundig forståelse av de komplekse vindforholdene som oppleves på havet og forstå hvordan WAPS bør brukes for å møte denne utfordringen på en optimal måte. Vindforholdene i skipsfart kan variere betydelig avhengig av ruten (dypt hav, kyst, osv.), men også innenfor samme seilas. WAPS må derfor utformes for å fungere i et bredt spekter av vindforhold. Dette kompliseres ytterligere av bevegelsen indusert av fartøyet. Som en ny teknologi, er den fulle innvirkningen av de dynamiske, realistiske vindforholdene på WAPS ennå ikke fullt ut forstått. 
reSail vil fremme vindassistert fremdrift ved å forbedre forståelsen av vindforholdene som WAPS vil utsettes for. Vindmålinger på skip vil sammen med vindtunnelmålinger og modelleringsarbeid muliggjøre forbedring av kontroll, plassering og implementering for å realisere det fulle drivstoff- og utslisppsbesparende potensialet til WAPS.

Wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) have the potential to contribute significantly to the decarbonization of international shipping. They are particularly suited for large vessels, which contribute heavily to global emissions from the maritime industry. To maximise the potential of wind-assisted propulsion the wind conditions WAPS are facing and how they affect wind propulsion ships need to be well understood. reSail will address this challenge by generating full-scale measurement data from a demonstrator ship, examining the ideal placement of wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) on a ship, developing advanced aerodynamic models and control strategies to make the newly acquired knowledge available to a broad audience and finally assess the implications of complex wind conditions on ship operation. 
This will be obtained by a combination of methods ranging from, field measurements on a sea-going vessel, laboratory scale experiments in tailored flow conditions, to simulations of both individual components, such as the control system, as well as the ship holistically. The project will be conducted by a strong consortium comprised of three research institutions with strong competence in maritime transport, fluid mechanics, control strategies and ship operation, both experimentally and numerically, as well as key industry actors in shipping, wind-assisted propulsion and Geo-data. Close collaboration between the partners and among the different tasks in the project will advance wind-assisted propulsion and thus efficient green shipping in Norway.

Noen av de mest mangfoldige slektene på planeten vår finnes på øyer. Likevel er øyer ofte avsidesliggende og isolerte, og øyarter har små populasjonsstørrelser som gjør naturlig utvalg mindre effektivt og fører til høyere utryddelsesrater. Dette skaper et paradoks: hvordan kan vi observere så stort biologisk mangfold på øyer hvis forholdene tilsynelatende er ugunstige for diversifisering?

I dette prosjektet har vi som mål å utforske dette spørsmålet ved å sekvensere genomer fra tusenfryd (familie Asteraceae) på Galápagos. Vi vil fokusere på tre slekter som er hjemmehørende på Galápagos: Darwiniothamnus, Lecocarpus og Scalesia. Ved å analysere genetiske data håper vi å avdekke hvordan endringer i populasjonsstørrelse, artsdannelse, kolonisering av nye miljøer og populasjonsvekst har bidratt til diversifisering. Vi vil også identifisere genomiske trekk forbundet med diversifisering, med fokus på utviklingen av strukturelle varianter og pangenom-variasjon.

This proposal will study how isolated lineages generate and maintain genetic diversity. Three replicate radiations of the sunflower family on the Galápagos Islands – Scalesia, Lecocarpus and Darwiniothamnus will be investigated. Despite the constraints imposed by founder events, small population sizes, and inbreeding, these radiations exhibit remarkable ecological and phenotypic diversity, prompting the question: how do isolated lineages generate and maintain genetic diversity?

Understanding the mechanisms of genetic diversity generation and maintenance is crucial for predicting the ability of species to recover from human-induced population declines. Habitat fragmentation, habitat destruction, and climate change are rapidly diminishing species diversity worldwide, making it imperative to identify the factors that contribute to the recovery of genetic variation. In this context, insular lineages can serve as model systems as their outstanding diversity arises following a founder event. The findings of this research will directly inform conservation efforts by collaboration with the GalápagosVerde2050 project.

Our research will employ molecular and bioinformatic methods. This includes the ancestral recombination graph to determine the age of genetic variation of different genomic regions, comparing empirical to simulated data, and assessing the role of structural variants and pangenomes in local adaptation. We aim to produce three high-impact manuscripts that offer insights into the generation and maintenance of genetic diversity.

IslandParadox - Unraveling the Paradox of Genetic Diversity in Isolated Oceanic Lineages

Achieving effective reduction in greenhouse emissions necessitates both preventing resource depletion and offering sustainable solutions to meet the increasing demand for energy. The technology developed in the NEXPECH2 project effectively addresses the above-mentioned challenges by using solar energy to convert water to green hydrogen (H2) under standard atmospheric temperature and pressure. Green hydrogen is a clean, sustainable chemical fuel that can be stored on a large scale for a long time and used to replace fossil fuels as a means of energy storage, transportation fuel, and feedstock. The NEXPECH2 ultimate goal is to deliver green H2 on a prototype lab-scale via development of a innovative photoelectrochemical (PEC) system for maximized solar light harvesting and efficient solar conversion to H2. The project will develop a low-cost compact device with an objective of reaching 10% solar-to-fuel efficiency and <10% degradation over 200 h operation.

interactions into analyses, and by further developing a contrastive and genealogical methodology, called the Water-Society System Approach.

Dagens moderne høy-energi eksperimenter antas å reprodusere de ekstreme forholdene i det tidlige universet, og dermed forholdene for prosesser koblet til hadronisering. Tung ion kollisjoner i dagens "state-of-the-art" akseleratorer sørger for muligheten for att å undersøke hadronisering og fenomener knyttet til den. Veien til observerbare hadroner antas å gå gjennom flere faseoverganger. Manifestasjoner av disse eksotiske faser, f.eks. "kvark-gluon-plasma" kan observeres i detektorene gjennom partikkel spektra og asimut. Fenomenene koblet til hadronisering er kun tilgjengelig gjennom observasjon av partikkelfordelinger i detektorene. Dette betyr at de evolverte prosessene er kun mulig å observere gjennom forekomster og sammenheng i detektorene; hvilket innebær at avhengigheter av målbare parametere må undersøkes i teoretiske modeller og testet mot eksperimentelle data. For å undersøke avhengigheter, er en realistisk beregningsmodell således nødvendig. Simuleringsmodellen i bruk er HYDJET ++; som har vist seg vellykket i å simulere partikkel spektra og asimutal distribusjoner. Etter å ha undersøkt lavere ordres manifestasjoner; så er simulering av høyere ordens fenomener neste åpenbare steg i undersøkelsen av manifestasjoner av grunnleggende fysiske prosesser. Tilsetningen av realistiske svingninger er her antatt å tilveiebringe en høyere ordens simulering; som antas å gi et betydelig bidrag til den allerede beviste simuleringsmodell. Simuleringene ser ut til å vise funksjoner i dype prosesser som antas å være knyttet til dynamikken i massegenerering.

The modern day high-energy physics experiments are believed to reproduce the extreme conditions of the early universe, including hadronization processes. Heavy ion collisions in state-of-the-art accelerators provide means of investigating hadronization and phenomena connected to it. The paths to observable hadrons are believed to go through several phase transitions. The manifestations of these exotic phases, e.g. "quark gluon plasma" may be observed in the detectors through particle spectra and azimuth. The phenomena connected to hadronization are only accessible through particle distributions. This means that the processes involved in the participant matter evolution are only possible to observe through abundances and coherence in the detectors. Thus, the dependencies of the observables have to be investigated in the models and tested against experimental data. 
In order to investigate these dependencies, a realistic computational model is necessary. The simulation model in use is HYDJET++; which has proven successful in simulating particle spectra and azimuthal distributions. In the model; the superposition of parametrized hydrodynamics and an iterated hard state provides a solid foundation for the investigations of fundamental physics in heavy-ion collisions. Having investigated the lower order harmonics successfully; the need for simulating higher order harmonics (flow) is becoming obvious when examining correlations and interplay. The addition of realistic fluctuations is thus believed to provide for a higher order fireball simulation; and as such believed to make a significant contribution to the already proven simulation model.

The ISQBP, International Society of Quantum Biology and Pharmacology, is a is a society founded in 1970 to provide a forum for chemists, pharmacologists and biologists to discuss and extend the impact of computational methodologies in the fields of biology, chemistry, medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, drug discovery, pharmacology, bioinformatics, genomics and proteomics.

The main fora offered by the ISQBP is the biennial President?s meeting. Previous meetings gathered up to ca. 120 scientists from all over the world and have taken place in Strasbourg, France (2006), Ascona, Switzerland (2008), Cetraro, Italy (2010), Stockhom, Sweden (2012), Telluride, U.S.A. (2014). The next edition, in 2016, will take place in Bergen and we are hereby applying for funding to support the attendance of young scientists. We apply for supporting the attendance of 30 PhD students by offering them reduced conference fees.

ISQBP2016 President's Meeting

Forskningsprosjektet har dreid seg om å skape mer geologisk realistiske 3D-modeller basert på satellittbilder og hydrodynamiske prosessimuleringer (med programvaren Delft3D fra Deltares). Dette er viktig bl.a. for å modellere sedimentære strukturer som er relevant for CO2-lagring, hydrokarboner og flyt av grunnvann. Satellittdata som dekker hele jordkloden, større datakraft og bedre algoritmer muliggjør denne tilnærmingen. 

Tradisjonelle geostatistiske simuleringsmetoder er mangelfulle siden de vanligvis ikke garanterer geologisk realistiske former eller kontinuitet. Inversjon eller tolkning av seismikk gir heller ikke korrekte estimater av usikkerhet. I dette prosjektet brukes moderne maskinlæring: dyp læring / nevrale nettverk og grafteori. 

Gjennom prosjektet har vi vist at Generative Nevrale Nettverksmodeller og grafer kan brukes til å simulere geologisk struktur. Dette er langt raskere og mer moderne metoder enn tradisjonell geostatistisk inversjon.

The proposed project is a four-year Ph.D. program at the Department of Energy Resources Engineering and the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering at Stanford University, United States. The main objective is to obtain significant new res ults from independent research within the field of computational geoscience. A milestone will be to pass the qualification examination and the Ph.D. project proposal defense after the first academic year. I will also remain affiliated with the Norwegian C omputing Center, where I am currently employed as a research scientist, during this period. The exact topic of the research project is not known yet.

Since I have received a Fulbright Scholarship for the first academic year (2014-15), I am obliged to ret urn to work in Norway for a minimum of two years after graduation in 2018. It would therefore be advantageous to work on a project which is relevant for contract research at the Norwegian Computing Center or that fits with the research opportunities at th e University of Oslo or at NTNU.

PhD in Computational Geoscience

Mange tilfeldige diskrete modeller har visse karakteristiske egenskaper naar stoerrelsen paa modellen vokser. Ofte kan vi si at modellen konvergerer naar stoerrelsen gaar mot uendelig, og vi sier at modellen har en "scaling limit". Objektet modellen konvergerer til er ofte et tilfeldig objekt som illustrerer egenskaper ved den diskrete modellen. Jeg har studerte diskrete modeller inspirert av anvendelser i fysikk, geometri, computer science, and sosialvitenskapene, og de kontinuerlige objektene som beskriver "scaling limits" for disse objektene. Scaling limits som ikke endrer egenskaper under konforme transformasjoner har vaert av spesiell interesse for meg.

The objective of the project is completing a doctoral degree in mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The first 1-2 years of the programme will consist of courses and preparation for the qualifying exam, while the rest of the programme wil l consist of independent research activity leading to the doctoral dissertation. Indicative interest areas for the research period are analysis, partial differential equations and probability, but the exact topic of the dissertation will be decided after  the start of the programme. The doctoral programme lasts for up to five years, of which this application for support concerns the period from June 2014 to August 2017.

I dette prosjektet har vi fokusert på hvordan å produsere såkalte Hourly Price Forward Curves (HPFC), for å modellere strømprisene på en timesbasis. Hovedsaklig for det Tyske markedet, men resultatene kan anvendes på andre markeder. En HPFC gir deg timespriser som en funksjon av de observerte Futures kontraktene, disse dekker typisk måneder, kvartal eller et år. 

Vi har delt prosjektet inn i tre hoveddeler:

Først fokuserte vi på hvordan HPFCene typisk er blitt produsert, der vi har sett på to metoder allerede publisert. Deretter konstruerte vi vår egen HPFC basert på en constrained least squares optimiseringsmetode brukt på en trigonometrisk spline. Deretter testet vi disse kurvene mot hverandre for å finne ut hvilken var best. Vi konkluderte med at alle kurvene hadde sine sterke og svake sider, vi diskuterer også hvordan vi kan bruke disse resultatene til å lage en optimal HPFC.

I den andre delen av prosjektet fokuserer vi på hvordan disse kurvene forandrer seg når vi nærmer oss leveringstidspunktet og dataene brukt for konstruksjonen forandrer seg. Disse forandringene er enten at prisen på en observert kontrakt forandrer seg, eller at en kontrakt som nå dekker en viss periode (f.eks et kvartal), blir delt opp i tre individuelle måneder. Vi finner ut at en prisforandring i en observert kontrakt har en tilnærmet lik effekt i alle tre metodene, mens i en metode får vi uønskede resultater når kurvene splittes opp. Dette fører til såkalte teoretiske arbitrage muligheter, som gjør at man kan tjene penger uten risiko.


I den tredje og siste delen bruker vi kunnskapen vi har opparbeidet også tidligere til å konstruere en stokastisk model for HPFCen. Vi antar da en sannsynlighetsfordeling for Futures kontraktene og ser på hvordan sannsynlighetsfordeling til HPFCene blir i framtiden. Vi har sett spesielt på hvordan vi kan ta splittingen av Futures kontrakter fra kvartal til måned inn i denne analysen for å få konsekvente sannsynlighetsmodeler. For at dette skal kunne gjøres begrenser vi oss til såkalte  independent and identically distributed distributions. Vi finner spesielt ut at fra de kjente sannsynlighetsfordelingene er det bare normalfordelingen som passer til alle kriteriene våre.

Resultatene fra denne doktorgraden kan gi innsikt i hvordan man kan produsere HPFCer for strømpriser, men også hvordan dette kan brukes for andre varer som blir handlet på tilsvarende måter med Futures kontrakter, slik som olje, gass osv.

The project will focus on computations relevant to HPFCs(Hourly price forward curves), which is the major tool used for computations concerning power markets. 

This project aims specifically to develop a methodology that takes into the account the effect  of renewable energy sources to these curves. Since renewable energy(e.g. wind and photovoltaic energy) is hard to control, this will lead to high volatility, which in turn will lead to highly volatile prices, so a lot of the work will be concerning the r isk this impose. 

This project will give a better understanding of the risk and problems concerning renewable energy, which in turn will give a better use and production of such energy sources.

The problems concerning this will project will be divided i nto modelling and computational problems. In the modelling part, it might be hard to incorporate the renewables in an appropriate way, and we need to identify the different characteristics concerning the different types of energy sources, but all these pr oblems should be minor, as the project will focus on the computations.

For computations it will be several problems, we will first need to specify a realistic model, here problems will be to assume the right kind of model. We will also need to fit data t o this model, which will use different types of regression methods. At last we will need to make use of numerical methods, so we can solve these problems in appropriate time.

The findings of this project will lead to better understanding of renewables as  an energy source, which will make it possible to utilize these better. Also the findings could potentially be used in other parts of mathematics, where stochastic analysis, model fitting and numerical problems are used(like for other financial products l ike stocks, interest rates etc.).

The national ELIXIR.no infrastructure is organising the international Bioinformatics 2014 conference in Oslo in June next year. This is a well-known annual conference of very high quality. This application is for funding of 50% of the total cost of invite d speakers to the conference.

The Bioinformatics meeting series was initiated in Lund in Sweden in 1999, and has been organized almost every year since then. It is coordinated by SocBiN. This was originally the Society for Bioinformatics in Nordic Countr ies, but it has recently been expanded to cover Northern Europe, in particular for the inclusion of Poland and the Baltic countries. Norway was responsible for the meeting in 2002, when it was organised in Bergen. The most recent meetings have taken place  in Finland (Helsinki, 2011), Sweden (Stockholm, 2012) and Poland (Torun, 2013).

The proposal by ELIXIR.no to organise the 2014 meeting in Norway has been approved by the SocBiN board. The meeting will be organised in Oslo, with bioinformaticians from th e Oslo area as local organizers, and with members of the ELIXIR.no network and the SocBiN board as program committee. The meeting will take place in week 24, June 11-13, in Ole-Johan Dahls House at UiO Department of Informatics.

5th International Workshop on Modeling the Ocean, IWMO 2013

The IWMO, International Workshop on Modeling the Ocean, conferences have been arranged since 2009.
They have become very important meeting places for ocean modelers from many countries around th e world.
The IWMO evolved from the Princeton Ocean Model users group meetings,
but it is open to the ocean modeling community at large and the contributions
at the science meetings are based on results from a variety of different models.
The themes
 at th e conferences cover all aspects of ocean modelling including
numerical techniques, parallel computing, coupled air-wave-sea, ice and
current-sediment modeling: processes, analysis and prediction, process oriented studies and
eco-system modeling.
 The eart h system is inter-connected on a broad range of temporal and spatial scales,
 and coastal, regional and basin-scale studies,
as well as interdisciplinary topics are covered.

The first IWMO conference in 2009 was held in Taipei, Taiwan. In 2010 the confer ence was in Norfolk, USA, in 2011
in Qingdao, China, and in 2012 the conference was held in Yokohama, Japan,  see
http://www.jamstec.go.jp/frcgc/jcope/htdocs/e/iwmo2012.html.
The members of the scientific committee are obliged to host the conferences in t urn to make sure
that the meetings rotate geographically.
At the Yokohama meeting in May 2012 it was decided that the next meeting should be in a European country,
and since the applicant behind this proposal was in the  scientific committee,
the decision  was that IWMO 2013 will be arranged in Bergen, Norway, from 17.-20. June 2013.
I  am now seeking financial support for this conference.

At the Yokohama conference there were 100 attendants and we expect a similar number of participants at IWMO 2013.

5th International Workshop on Modeling the Ocean, IWMO 2013

The Galaxy Community Conference (GCC) is held every other year in the US and Europe and is the main event of the Galaxy community. In 2012, the conference was in Chicago - http://wiki.g2.bx.psu.edu/Events/GCC2012.
Galaxy is an open web-based platform for  genomic research initially developed at Penn State and Emory Universities. It now has a large and growing community including institutions such as the Broad Institute, J. Craig Venter Institute, Sanger Institute, and EMBL in Barcelona and Heidelberg. The  system allows efficient user and data handling, web accessibility, workflow construction and data sharing and puts special emphasis on transparency and reproducibility. (See refs. [1] and [2] in the Project description.)

Galaxy is in use in several UiO p rojects (e.g. refs. [3] and [4] in the Project description.) It has been chosen as a university-wide platform for bioinformatics. Although the main focus of Galaxy is presently on genomics, much of the functionality is similarly applicable to scripts and  software from any discipline. Thus the ambition of UiO is to develop the Galaxy system further as a general basis for web-based access to applications, and become a key node for the Nordic Galaxy community.

The 2013 conference will be held at the premise s of Department of informatics at UiO and will follow the format of previous events. However, in addition, we will organize pre-conference applied workshops designed to mobilize and motivate life scientists as well as pharmaceutical and biotech companies.

During the conference it is expected that approximately 120 talks will be given, including 9 invited plenary talks. As a part of the conference we have also asked 6 researchers from around the world to organize mini-symposia on selected topics. The invite d speakers and minisymposia organizers are selected based on input from an international scientific committee.

Mathematical Methods for Curves and Surfaces

VeRoLog www.verolog.eu is the Working Group on Vehicle Routing and Logistics Optimization within EURO, the Association of the European Operational Research Societies. It was established in 2011. Vehicle Routing optimization is at the core of logistics and  supply chain management as well as management of public transportation. It is a very active research area in Operations Research that sees an intense contribution from a large number of researchers working in universities, research centres and companies.  As a computationally hard discrete optimization problem the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is scientifically very interesting. It has high relevance to eScience.

An annual, scientific, international VeRoLog conference will rotate between the EURO member  societies. It is the only major conference where the VRP and its variants is the sole scientific topic. The ongoing DOMinant II project in eVITA is about two particular types of VRP: fleet composition and inventory routing. Professor Christiansen, NTNU, P M of DOMinant II, and Chief Research Scientist Hasle, SINTEF, the principal DOMinant II investigator at SINTEF, are two of eight members of the VeRoLog board. The countries represented in the board are expected to take responsibility for the first confere nces in the series.

The first VeRoLog conference will take place in Bologna, Italy June 18-20 2012. By the deadline, some 130 abstracts have been submitted. There are 3 invited keynote speakers and 1 invited tutorial. The conference fee is 300 Euros, wit h 200 Euros for PhD students. VeRoLog 2013 is expected to be arranged in Great Britain. The DOMinant II partners NTNU, SINTEF, and Høgskolen i Molde have informally proposed Norway as venue for VeRoLog 2014 to the VeRoLog board. To ensure a high scientifi c quality and an acceptable conference fee we need economical support. In case, the three organizers will provide substantial in-kind financing. We will also invite private sponsors.
