Spatiotemporal variation and diversity of pathogens within a salmon cage and farm

Fiskesykdommer er en av de mest utfordrende sakene den norske havbruksnæringen står overfor i dag. Infeksjonssykdommer forårsaket av bakterier, virus eller parasitter svekker fiskens velferd, fører til gevinsttap og kan potensielt også ha negative konsekvenser for miljøet. God sykdomskontroll er derfor viktig og forstå mekanismene for hvordan patogener spres er avgjørende for å sikre en bærekraftig produksjon av laks. Derfor vil kunnskap som bidrar til å løse dette problemet på en bærekraftig måte gi betydelige sosiale og miljømessige fordeler og bærekraftig vekst i næringen. Forskning rettet mot å dempe parasitterangrep er derfor av strategisk betydning for myndighetene, industrien og forskningsinstitusjonene som deltar i det foreslåtte prosjektet. For å takle disse enestående utfordringene, er det behov for samarbeid som samler forskjellige synspunkter og kunnskap utover en enkelt disiplin. Dette prosjektet har undersøkt etablering av et sterkt og utfyllende konsortium fra forskjellige fagområder, som gjør det mulig å svare på disse utfordringene.

Two research application have been submitted to the research council in 2019, with two partners visited in this project (see report file): 1:Havbruk program Title: An innovative approach for mapping the spatiotemporal variation and diversity of pathogens within salmon farms . 2: MarinForsk program Title: An advanced methodology for assessment of organic waste from salmon farms and impact on marine ecosystems

Fish diseases are one of the most challenging issues facing the Norwegian aquaculture industry today. Infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites impair fish welfare, lead to profit losses, and can potentially also have negative consequences for the environment. Effective disease control is therefore crucial and understanding the mechanisms for how pathogens spread is imperative for ensuring a sustainable production of salmon. Hence, knowledge that contributes to solving this problem in an ecological way will provide considerable social and environmental benefits and sustainable growth of the industry. Research aimed at mitigation of parasite infestations is therefore of strategic importance to the authorities, the industry, and the research institutions participating in the suggested project. To tackle these formidable challenges, there is a need for collaboration that brings together diverse viewpoints and knowledge beyond a single discipline. This project will investigate the establishment of a strong and complementary consortium from various disciplines to meet these challenges. All the international partners in this support project have different expertise, knowledge, and competences, which will enhance the complementarity and interdisciplinarity of this consortium. Different workshops will be organized with these partners to define one or two projects which will be submitted to program (Havbruk) from the NRF. Different suitable research topics have been identified: Research area 2: Fish health -Relevant infectious agents (both known and unknown) that lead to diseases with significant impacts on animal welfare, the environment and profitability. -New methods/strategies to combat salmon lice. -Transmission of infection between farmed fish and wild stocks. -The environment as a depot for pathogens. Research area 4: Production technology and processing technology -Technology for preventing and combating salmon lice.
