Life Strategy of Arctic Marine Phytoplankton in Central Part of Svalbard

Tildelt: kr 52 579

Marine phytoplankton is an elementary compound of food chain in the Arctic. The main phytoplankton blooms develop in spring and autumn. Its overwintering strategies are still not fully understood. Recent studies suggest that a part of the population is captured during new sea ice formation. Mixotrophy is another possible option for survival. A microalgal physiological state will be studied using fluorescence staining which enables us to evaluate exact state of single cells (activity, membrane damages, resting stage) together with a structure of the communities. For the field part of the study four study sites will be established in Billefjorden and studied during one-year period. Microalgae will be sampled from sediment traps installed in water column in three different depths (close to the bottom, in the end of euphotic layer, close to the surface).
