PlaceCity - Placemaking for Sustainable, Thriving Cities

PlaceCity prosjektet hadde det overordnede målet om å etablere et tverrfaglig europeisk placemaking-nettverk for å tilby støtte og ressurser til lokale og nasjonale placemaking initiativer i hele Europa og fremme placemaking som en ny verktøy til å skape bedre byer sammen. I løpet av prosjektet klarte samarbeidspartnerer å a) konsolidere det europeiske placemaking-nettverket som tilbyr verktøy og strategier til ulike lokale aktører som arbeider med placemaking, b) etablere det placemaking verktøykasse med placemaking verktøy og metoder, og c) etablere sterke placemaking nettverk i Oslo og Wien og d) fremme placemaking som et grunnleggende tiltak for byutvikling i Oslo og Wien ved å arbeide med kommuner, eiendomsutviklere, interesseorganisasjoner, gründere, kunstnere, studenter og forskere. I Oslo ble Grønland valgt som casestudie på grunn av forskjellige sosiale og økonomiske utfordringer som vises i området. Hovedmålet var å fasilitere at ungdommer i bydelen skaper gode åpne møteplasser og selv skaper varierte og inkluderende aktiviteter på skolegården for nabolaget og medelever på ungdommenes egne premisser. Gjennom placemaking og andre kreative deltakelsesmetoder, identifiserte og kartla ungdommer selv behov, utfordringer, ønsker og ideer for skolegården blant medstudenter, lærere og naboer. Basert på disse funnene testet og implementerte studenter og andre unge mennesker placemaking tiltak på skolegården til å skape positive og inkluderende møteplasser og aktiviteter for hele nabolaget. Hovedresultatene i casestudien i Oslo er: a) at ungdommer ble aktive og synlige placemakingeksperter i deres nærmiljø, b) en mer levelig og trygg skolegård for studenter og lokale innbyggere, c) et sterkt og langvarig (internasjonalt og lokalt) nettverk av aktører som arbeider med placemaking og andre andre interessenter, og d) en placemaking verktøykasse tilpasset til de lokale utfordringene i Oslo, med publikasjoner som samler beste placemaking-praksis og mulige placemaking forretningsmodeller, erfaringer fra prosjektet og håndbøker og verktøy.

Through PlaceCity Project, placemaking has grown in its impact to connect placemakers, as well as pushing the methodological underpinnings of the field working on the local and European level. By publishing open-source and user-friendly digital tools, the project advantageously highlighted local Placemaking Heroes, thereby garnering interest in their work with the surrounding network, and bringing forward their tools and practices. Considering our multitude of international webinars and articles, we have pushed the concept of placemaking on the global level. Specific to Oslo and Vienna, the local municipalities added to their city-wide strategy with enhanced citizen participation during the project. The cities have improved their understanding of the placemaking concept compared to the initial start. Placemaking brings forth more accessible public services that empower citizens to co-create places together and impact the cities approach to development, regeneration and gentrification.

«PlaceCity- placemaking for sustainable, thriving cities» is a practitioner-led consortium which has as its overarching goal the establishment of a multidisciplinary and trans-sectorial European Placemaking Network as an entity with the capacity to offer support and resources to local and national placemaking initiatives across Europe. The consortium aims to advance placemaking as a new approach to creating better cities together. The consortium aims to gather placemaking tools and implement those tools in the partner’s cities. The aim of implementation is not merely to test the tools but also to establish sustainable business cases for placemaking in local contexts. To achieve this we work together with a combination of local partners (cities, communities, businesses) as well as partners at a higher level (knowledge partners, governments etc).Thus, the consortium will develop itself as a knowledge platform that with a direct connection to the implementation of that knowledge. The final results of this project will be: A) a consolidated European network for placemaking that offers constructive tools and strategies to local placemaking practitioners.
