Svalbard Social Science Initiative - a network of social scientists working in Svalbard

Tildelt: kr 99 999

The Svalbard Social Science Initiative (SSSI) will fill a gap by connecting social scientists working on issues related to Svalbard. The aim of the network is to coordinate social science research related to Svalbard, and to enhance its quality and its impact on the local communities. In the proposed side meeting during the Svalbard Science Conference, the initiative will for the first time bring together social scientists working on issues related to Svalbard. The meeting would serve two purposes, which reflect the proposed structure of the meeting into two parts. Firstly, the meeting will provide a space for presenting and discussing past, present and future social science research on Svalbard. Two keynotes will set the scene, followed by short presentations of past and current projects. In the following panel discussion, the presentations will be discussed and central topics, methodological challenges and the place of Svalbard research within broader social science discourses and theoretical developments will be identified. Secondly, the side meeting will provide the opportunity for consolidating the Svalbard Social Science Initiative (SSSI) and plan future activities. Specific topics to be discussed include the form of the network, its organizational structure and future meetings; communication, outreach and collaboration with local institutions, both scientific and non-scientific; future collaborative projects; a network seminar including a public town hall meeting; data sharing and ethics in Svalbard social science research, and networking with other relevant institutions and networks. The main outcome will be improved coordination of social science on Svalbard and spreading knowledge about social science research activities widely throughout the Svalbard-related scientific community.
