There have been several Industry 4.0 related R&D initiatives, focused on the development of new techniques, technologies and progress beyond existing technologies/methods, with the aim of improving the automation performance and the industrial productivity. However, so far, there is no architecture or platform available, where a company can find existing technologies and/or methods suitable for integration within its own shop-floor. Furthermore, there is no common European architecture to regroup the different technologies developed to support the European industry. In this framework and having factory optimization and interoperability as primary objectives, 3IoTech project will propose an architecture of IIoT technologies that will cover the whole value chain, from IIoT devices and networks to final data-intensive applications, supported by interoperability-empowered existing IoT platforms and connected to existing production management tools and cybersecurity. Success of 3IoTech architecture will be determined by a set of R&D challenges: the coexistence of different IoT communication networks; the optimization of Real-time and non-Real-time IoT networks; the integration of heterogeneous data collected from different sources; the definition of an Edge-Cloud architecture; the support of Interoperability among IoT Platforms and DESs; the implementation of a Holistic Cyber-Security approach; and the improvement of Data-intensive Applications. This architecture will be tested at diverse real-environment scenarios (i.e. manufacturing plants of various sectors) and with different data-intensive applications (e.g. Condition Monitoring or Energy Efficiency). Nine use cases, with the final goal of factory optimization, have been defined in order to test the 3IoTech developments. All the use cases will make use of the outcomes of the 3IoTech project, such as, IIoT, data exploitation applications, cyber-security, advanced visualization and interoperability technologies.
