Our product involves a combination of a mechanical debridement and a new form of antibacterial gel, which in turn is combined with light devices. NuBoneGel consist of micro and nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles that upon exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) on their surface. The ROS are the responsible to kill the bacteria and after bacteria killing the particles recover the initial status – i.e. the natural and unharmful state. This treatment will effectively eradicate the bacterial biofilm on the micro-and nanostructured surfaces of implants without the use of local or systemic antibiotics. Bacteria will not be able to develop resistance against H2O2, which is a common and dangerous problem with the antibiotics. NuBoneGel™ is then an optimal mixture of small (nm) sized particles together with particles in the µm range that allow an effective bactericidal effect (nanoparticles) and removal of the biofilm by friction (microparticles). The NuBoneGel™ itself generates ROS without external stimuli, but the effect can be greatly improved via shining light on the NuBoneGel™. NuBoneGel™ is fully developed and we are aiming for close-to-market activities with SME Instrument funding. Therefore, there are no concerning R&D challenges but instead, challenges related to translating a product into a business opportunity and defining a commercial strategy for commercialization. As such, we need to perform a risk analysis, analyze competition, look at an IP management plan, make financial projections and prepare documentation for investors. This is among other various activities that focus on the development of an innovation strategy.
