The overall objective of our Eurostars project is to develop a voyage data recording (VDR) solution for autonomous vessels and utilize the data-stream for enhanced e-Navigation services. Already the role of humans in ship navigation has decreased, since the positioning equipment and autopilots do most of the work when at sea, though the responsibilities and decision-making still in hands of the vessel crew. By replacing, or assisting, the crew with top-of-the-line technology, shipping companies can achieve better profits from reduced manning costs and increased cargo carrying capacities, while the whole industry can become safer by removing many human errors that lead to incidents. This project will be carried out with our Danish partner Danelec Marine as the project coordinator and lead applicant. While NAVTOR will act as a work package leader, partner and participant in this project, focusing on aspects related to data catch and analysis, monitoring solutions, dashboard development and other aspects as a natural extension of our core business within e-Navigation. In the Eurostars project, we aim to extend the NAVTOR range of e-Navigation services by utilizing the new VDR data feed for autonomous vessels to make a new generation of monitoring and dashboard solutions for vessel and shore used for remote monitoring and piloting. A major limitation for further e-Navigation services lies in the current data feed from the vessel, a barrier this Eurostars project aims to remove. NAVTOR, with more than 5000 vessels sailing world-wide, will take active part in validating the new VDR service.
