Environmental sustainability, marine economies and gendered socio-economic inequalities:A Norway-Brazil partnership in research and teaching

«Environmental sustainability, marine economies and gendered socio-economic inequalities (ENMARINE): A Norway-Brazil partnership in research and teaching (2020-2024)» er et tverrfaglig strategisk partnerskap i undervisning og forskningsutvikling, tematisk rettet mot skjæringspunktene mellom miljømessig bærekraft, marine økonomier og kjønnede sosio-økonomiske ulikheter. Prosjektet definerer marine økonomier som utvinning og høsting av marine ressurser, men også økonomiske aktiviteter som tar plass i det marine rom, som for eksempel offshore fornybar og ikke-fornybar ressursutvinning, industriell utvikling og sjøbasert handel. Den økende kompleksiteten av økonomiske aktiviteter som foregår på forskjellige skalaer og blant ulikt posisjonerte aktører i og tilknyttet det marine rom, kombinert med konsekvensene av klimaendringer og miljøforringelse, fordrer mer forskning på hvordan ulike former for økonomisk aktivitet sameksisterer og utløser konflikter, og de komplekse og akkumulerende effektene dette har på miljøet, økosystemer, lokalsamfunn og samfunnet forøvrig. En sentral målsetning for ENMARINE er å utvide dette forskningsfeltet ved å utvikle et eksplisitt kjønnet analytisk rammeverk for å forstå de ulike formene for ulikhet som disse prosessene produserer. Prosjektet er et samarbeid mellom Institutt for Sosialantropologi, Universitetet i Bergen (UiB), og Institutt for Oseanografi og Institutt for Utdanning, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG) i Brasil. I løpet av prosjektperioden har prosjektet frembrakt forskermobilitet mellom Brasil og Norge, kontakt mellom norske og brasilianske studenter og forskere, avstedkommet et utvidet internasjonalt nettverk gjennom prosjektkonferanse og øvrig workshop- og konferansedeltagelse utløst av prosjektet, avfødt nettverksbygging og informasjonsutveksling mellom forskere, NGOs, og fiskeribransjeaktører, tilrettelagt for forskningsformidling gjennom publikasjoner, gjesteforelesninger og konferansepresentasjoner, fremmet prosjektdeltagernes karriereutvikling, frembrakt institusjonelle erfaringer om internasjonalt samarbeid mellom Norge og Brasil innen høyere utdanning og forsking, og generert nye forskningsideer som danner grunnlaget for pågående forskning og utvikling av søknader om forskningsprosjekt.

Outcomes: - Expanding project participants' international networks through fostering new research- and networking partnerships and through an increased public profile inside and outside academia, both nationally and internationally. - Positioning and preparing project participants for developing research projects proposals. - Generating knowledge dissemination through publications, conference papers and invited talks. - Increasing project participants’ experience in international project collaboration and administration. - Disseminating knowledge about Brazil and the project's topical focus amongst students and staff at the UiB. - Disseminating knowledge about Norway and the project's topical focus amongst students and staff at FURG. - Fostering close relationships between project members at UiB and FURG, facilitating potential future research- and teaching collaboration. Impact: - ENMARINE has enabled ongoing and planned research, research project development and research dissemination on the project’s topical focus. Furthermore, it has significantly expanded research participants’ national and international networks. Consequently, the project has provided a platform for current and future possibilities to have societal impact through informing policy and the public in matters of equitable and sustainable management of natural resources and the environment, as well as its gendered dimensions, on the basis of research-based knowledge.

The ENMARINE project is a strategic partnership that aims to establish the University of Bergen as a hub for world–class research and teaching centered on the thematic pillars of environmental sustainability, marine economies and gendered social-economic inequalities. The project's inception is anchored in collaboration among scholars at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Bergen, and the Institute of Oceanography and Institute of Education at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (Rio Grande Federal University, FURG), in Brazil. The project will develop a strong international network of scholars, also from other countries and regions, and advance additional partnership agreements during the project period. The partnership's overall purpose is to develop integrated research- and teaching methods and research projects that meet the highest international standards, and to build up resilient partnerships capable of foster academic excellency at all partner institutions involved, also beyond the project period. The project will also establish relations with relevant institutions and stakeholders outside of academia, both in Norway and Brazil, and actively engage with the SDGs both in research and teaching. To that end, the ENMARINE project's integrated project design encompasses: a) institutional agreements for bilateral student mobility, b) guest researcher exchange, c) collaborative teaching and supervision, incl. course development, d) the development of research proposals, e) collaborative publications, public outreach events and additional dissemination strategies, f) the arrangement of conferences in Brazil and Norway, g) the establishment of a collaborative student-researcher network, f) the establishment of a strong international network of scholars engaged in teaching and research centered on the project's thematic pillars, and g) a consolidated foundation for fostering new institutional partnerships with additional countries/institutions.
