Anatomy of Resistance Campaigns (ARC)

Tildelt: kr 0,43 mill.

The ARC project proposed a fundamental re-thinking of how resistance movements are conceptualized. While existing works had conceptualized episodes of resistance (and especially nonviolent resistance) as `campaigns' or `years' of contention, this masked enormous variation in the types of organizations that participated in these movements and their inter-organizational networks. This variation had not been studied from either a theoretical or an empirical perspective. The ARC project proposes to develop new theory linking variations in inter-organizational networks to democratization - tracing the democratization process from initial mobilization through short-term revolutions and longer-term institutional changes. The project also proposes novel data on organizational networks in resistance to test hypotheses drawn from the project. I was invited to an interview in Brussels in relation to this ERC StG application but funding was not awarded. This application to the Research Council of Norway is for funding to build on the high-risk aspects of the project in preparation to submit a CoG application in February 2021. The funding is requested in three areas: (1) clarifying concepts and novelty of the theoretical approach (2) experimenting with new automated methods of data collection and (3) for a workshop in late 2020 to obtain feedback on the CoG application from European-based experts.
