Geografi:

The North Atlantic Current (NAC) is an extension of the Gulf Stream, and transports warm, saline Atlantic water into the Nordic Seas and toward the Arctic. The NAC also represents the northern boundary of the Subtropical Gyre (STG), with the colder and fresher Subpolar Gyre (SPG) to the north. Heat anomalies progressing along the NAC is a robust finding in observational and modeling studies. From this progression there is a clear potential for practical and useful predictions of the climate state of the North Atlantic Ocean. Consensus has, however, not been reached on the cause of such heat anomalies and to what extent they are communicated between the subpolar North Atlantic and the Nordic Seas. The ocean dynamics responsible for setting the dominant timescales of variability also remain unclear. The objective of the work conducted during the research stay is to identify the key processes responsible, and further our understanding of the links between Nordic Seas variability and the wider subpolar North Atlantic region. This will be accomplished using analysis of numerical ocean model simulations.
