Through my participation I the Emerging Leader program I will have the opportunity to present my scientific project which is about the dominant spatial patterns of Barents Sea ice variability. During the past decades both atmosphere and ocean temperature have increased as a result of climate change. Polar regions seems to be more sensitive to the climate change, with temperature rising faster than any other region, resulting in significant sea ice loss. In the Arctic region, the sea ice extent, thickness and age have all declined throughout the year. In winter the most pronounced sea ice loss has taken place in the Barents Sea As the Barents Sea is a region of great importance both for the overall climate and for the economy of the surrounding countries, a lot of studies have been conducted to explain the behavior of the sea-ice variability. In this study we present a detailed assessment of the spatial and interannual variability of sea ice in the Barents Sea to obtain a better mechanistic understanding, and with the intention to develop more skillful and informative predictions.
