Interactions between domesticated and wild Atlantic salmon - collaboration between Norway and Canada

Tildelt: kr 0,27 mill.

Norway is today the largest producer of domesticated Atlantic salmon, followed by Chile, Scotland and Canada. Each year tens of thousands of fish are reported to escape from fish farms into the surrounding environment. Successful interbreeding and thus introgression of escaped salmon has been thoroughly documented in Norway as well as in other countries such as Canada. Domesticated salmon deviate from wild salmon in a broad range of traits. Consequently, offspring of domesticated salmon display reduced survival in the wild which ultimately may lead to a decline in population size. However, the degree of genetic impact of wild populations may be dependent on the selective pressure acting on domesticated individuals and consequently their offspring. Knowledge regarding the selection pressure and the long-term consequences of introgression is therefore crucial for a successful management and conservation of Atlantic salmon. The aim of this proposal is to establish international collaboration between the Population genetics research group at the Institute of Marine Research and the lab of Dr. Ian Bradbury, who is internationally recognized for its scientific work on genetic interactions between domesticated and Atlantic salmon in the western Atlantic. The project will include two scientific goals: 1) quantify the strength of natural selection acting against offspring of domesticated salmon in the wild by analyzing already executed experimental studies 2) participate in scientific discussions, observe practices and exchange knowledge regarding experimental design and genetic analyses performed on the wild/farmed interface with Dr. Bradbury and his staff. In addition, the proposal contains three collaboration and dissemination goals: 1) building a long-lasting collaboration between the Institute of Marine Research and Fisheries and Ocean Canada, 2) establish contact between applicant and members of the host institution, 3) shared publication.
