Overall concept and objectives of EU project: reTyre is a tyre system with detachable tread surfaces for bicycles, wheelchairs and prams which allow the user to easily change the tyre surface without removing the tyre itself. The method and technology is patented can also be utilized for scooters, motorcycles etc. The modular tyre system provides benefits for the whole value chain: from more sustainable tyre manufacturing, better differentiation and added functionality for the bicycle manufacturer, increased aftermarket opportunities for the retailer, a better biking experience for the user. Under the EU project, and in alignment with the call, the company will further focus on the production technologies that can be uniquely utilized for reTyre - and are of considerable value-adding effect. This will further strengthen reTyre’s industrial competitive advantage and lay the foundations for future investments in factories and tools. As the removable surfaces are manufactured separately from the pneumatic base some extraordinary opportunities previously unavailable for conventional tires are made available. These are: Automated mass production Tire manufacturing is labour intensive every tire is practically made by hand, which means that production is set to low-cost countries. Our Skins do not need these manual processes and can be produced by, for example, injection moulding or continuous dynamic extrusion which will be a paradigm shift in the tire industry and secure production in the EU. Unique materials with improved characteristics As the surface is manufactured separately, we can introduce new materials that are unavailable for conventional tire manufacturers. Materials such as TPU, TPE, recycled fibers and more providing benefits such as improved sustainability (recyclable skins) and improved functional characteristics (friction, life span, rolling resistance, etc.) and unique visual characters.
