FET Active Matter Manufacturing Methodology (FETA3M)

Tildelt: kr 59 999

The project FETA3M represents an ambitious, and the first ever, implementation of fundamental active matter science for up-scalable materials fabrication technology. Active matter systems, such as living systems, are internally driven by converting energy into motion, enabling a far greater variety of self-assembled structures than those derived from conventional equilibrium systems. The scientific field of artificial active matter is concerned with preparation and characterization of self-organized motion of self-propelled non-living building blocks. Such systems can exhibit designed disorder through controlled cooperative behaviour, and at the same time active matter manufacturing has the potential to enable bottom-up assembly routes with inherently much higher processing speeds than conventional materials processing can provide. Thus, active matter assembly has capability for a groundbreaking new design and manufacturing technology, both with respect to structural control, and processing speed. FETA3M will exploit these key features and capabilities of active matter manufacturing, by fabricating photonic meso-structures as proof-of-concept. An immediate practical result of FETA3M is the active matter based industrial production of reflective photonic structures that e.g. can replace conventional toxic chemical pigments, or act as boundaries for thermal regulation. FETA3M will employ common natural materials in the assembly: Clay, cellulose, magnetic iron oxide based colloids. The project will achieve its objectives by applying complementary interdisciplinary experimental and theoretical research, with academic partners representing materials science, physics, chemistry, biomimetics and chemical engineering, supported by production and development competence from industrial collaborators.
