EFFECTS OF MICRO- AND NANOPLASTIC EXPOSURE ON HUMAN HEALTH – A RISK ASSESSMENT (Abbreviation: MiMiR) relates to the topic “Micro- and nanoplastics in our environment: Understanding exposures and impacts on human health” (Call ID: H2020-SC1-BHC-36-2020) of the overall call “Better health and care, economic growth and sustainable health systems” with focus on the fifth main priority “Decoding the role of the environment, including climate change, for health and well-being” of this call, under the Health, demographic change and wellbeing work programme 2018-2020 of Horizon 2020. The MiMiR consortium will address the following research priorities on micro- and/or nanoplastics: • Environmental/food/water sources for micro- and/or nanoplastics and transmission to humans • Methods for identification and quantification of micro and/or nanoplastics in foods, environmental media and tissues • Exposure levels of humans to micro- and/or nanoplastics and methods for human biomonitoring • Analytical methods for detection of micro- and/or nanoplastics particles and contaminants • Microbial colonisation of micro- and/or nanoplastics as vectors for potential pathogens • Micro- and/or nanoplastics as condensation nuclei and/or carriers for airborne particulate matter and chemicals harmful to health • Toxicology and uptake of micro- and/or nanoplastics and additives/adsorbed contaminants • Fate of micro- and/or nanoplastics in the gastro-intestinal or respiratory tracts and secondary organs • Effects and transport of micro- and/or nanoplastics across biological barriers, and bioaccumulation and cell uptake of micro- and/or nanoplastics, including studies at the cellular and molecular levels • Consideration of the effect of shape (as well as size) of micro- and/or nanoplastics, and comparison with the behaviour and effects of non-synthetic homologues, e.g. wool fibres • Immune responses
