Flame retardant’ green alternatives, which try to replace ATO with less harmful substances are either expensive, compromise the mechanical properties of the plastics produced or have poor flame-retardant performance, defeating the purpose. After the penta, hexa, and octa brominated flame-retardant solutions were identified as environmentally hazardous and toxic and finally banned for most applications in Europe and North-America, the sustainable awareness of additives used in PVC and in other polymers has increased. Funzionano's D-PYRE™ is an environmentally sustainable flame retardant developed specifically for PVC products where high fire resistance is required, i.e. electric cables insulation, products for automotive and construction materials. D-PYRE™ has the potential to greatly reduce the use of Antimony Trioxide (ATO), a substance of very high environmental concern (SVHC-listed). D-PYRE™ will reduce the amount of ATO on PVC by 80%, with the potential to eliminate 49,000 tonnes of Antimony Trioxide annually from European PVC production. Moreover, we are already testing D-PYRE™ as environmentally friendly flame retardant in other formulations with other polymers, such as TPO / TPU, PE / PP / PET PTT obtaining excellent results. D-PYRE presents three following benefits compared to current flame retardants on the market Funzionano aims to industrialize and commercialize D-PYRE™, a new non-toxic and environmentally friendly flame retardant specifically formulated for plasticized PVC applications. This project will demonstrate and commercialize a disruptive environmentally friendly flame retardant that potentially can replace or reduce the concentration of Antimony trioxide (ATO) in flexible PVC products. Reducing ATO will help transition the plastic industry into a more clean and circular economy and bring new opportunities for innovation, competitiveness, and job creation
