Analysis of heavy metals and nutrients in lake water and inlet and outlet streams of Lake Sarsvatnet, Ny-Ålesund (RiS-ID: 11627)

Tildelt: kr 26 751

This AFG-project involves sampling activity for my master thesis with the aim to collect water samples from Sarsvatnet (Ny-Ålesund area) and surrouding streams to study the contribution of long-range pollutants to a limnic environment close to a glacial system. For the past several decades, the temperatures in the Arctic has risen nearly twice as fast as temperatures at lower altitudes. Climate change is causing higher rates in melting of glaciers and the subsequent release of long-range atmospheric pollutant such as heavy metals and nutrients that have been accumulated for years. In this AFG project, samples from Ny-Ålesund is planned to be collected to study the contribution of long-range pollutants to a limnic environment close to a glacial system. Concentrations of heavy metals, nutrients and other pollutants from input streams from glacial meltwater will be measured and compared to natural heavy metal concentration from streams in contact with only bedrock. Water samples will be collected during August 16th 2021. Samples will be taken from surrounding areas (total of 50-60 samples) at the inlet- and outlet streams of Sarsvatnet, as well as the lake itself.
