The future of offshore wind development, especially floating offshore wind, relies on the reduction of the overall project costs and impact on the environment and people. By marinizing topside electrical equipment and bringing them subsea, we expect a significant reduction in steel weight, installation cost and improved HSE. Similar projects in the Oil & Gas industry have demonstrated steel weight reduction of up to 90%, with positive consequences such as reduced installation costs and reduced CO2 emissions. It also gave better opportunities to use local construction yards and port facilities as the modules are smaller and allow for final assembly on land. This project will unlock the potential of offshore wind by offering a sustainable alternative to the traditional topside sub-stations. It is an opportunity to develop a green value chain in Norway and accelerate the green transition of existing processes, products and services by utilizing Norwegian subsea know-how and expertise to marinize world-class leading electrical technologies. In the pre-project phase, we will consolidate our partnerships with strategic partners and define the basis of the main project. The main project’s goal will be to demonstrate the technology in a real subsea environment. This will put us, our partners and suppliers in a strategic position to deliver to commercial floating and bottom-fixed offshore wind farms worldwide. The project will consist of several R&D activities. Depending on the outcome of the qualification basis we expect the main R&D activities to be; qualification of subsea wet-mate connectors and installation methodology for subsea dry-mate connectors.
