Thermal grids can maximize energy efficiency while also increasing energy reliability for all connected users. Despite the well-known advantages of DHS, its market share around the world is still very low; besides many social, economic, and technological issues revolving around worldwide implementation of DHSs, a predominant reason for slow developments and expansion in such systems is the lack of suitable tools to design, analyze, and optimize them. Based on the future EU objectives and policy expectations for the DHC sector technological requirements can be summarized as a) need for transport, distribution and storage of thermal/cooling energy b) Need to satisfy and analyze the heating/cooling demands; c) Need for short-term near real-time energy demand prediction, d) need for intelligent monitoring and operation control of DHC systems, e) Need to operate DHC systems as an integrated solution. ARMED aims to facilitate the integration of renewables on the planning and operation of DHC-N, proposing efficient measures, solutions and tools towards the development of a sustainable and smart multi resource DHC-N. The goal is the generation of effective solutions and information so that the integration of multiple resources and coupling with electricity domain is aximized. ARMED will provide scalable and replicable solutions for regulatory, technical and economic challenges for integrating a larger share of RES in DHC networks, by coordination of multiple and diversified resources, and by coupling with the electrical energy domain, while maintaining secure, reliable and high-quality services. ARMED solution is supported by a variety of tools that will be developed in a unified and holistic management framework, such as: (i) forecasting for short-term energy demand and resources availability; (ii) energy network analysis tools (iii) optimal scheduling and dispatching of network assets and (iv) demand side management.
