Realistic Cryptography for Large-scale Applications

Alternativ tittel: Realistisk kryptografi for storskalaanvendelser

Tildelt: kr 8,2 mill.

Nye digitale teknikker utsetter samfunnet vårt for stadig større omveltninger.

Our societies are increasingly exposed to disruptive changes caused by application of a broad array of digital technologies. This transformation opens a wealth of opportunities, but it also exposes us to several challenges. Large-scale, real-world applications (such as Ubiquitous Computing, Big Data, and Cloud Computing) not only provide us with convenient and personalized services, but also open up many novel attack surfaces. These applications often involve massive amounts of sensitive data. Security concerns about them are often raised. This demands us to construct cryptographic systems with not only mathematically-sound security, but also practical efficiency against realistic challenges. However, traditional cryptography considers mostly theoretical feasibility and fail to provide efficient instantiations. In particular, it analyzes the security of a scheme wrt a small scale and it does not offer enough degree of security for any application with a rapidly increasing scale. This project is to support a digital society where modern, large-scale applications can be realized while a high degree of security can be preserved in an efficient and mathematically-sound manner. Our project will focus on several crucial cryptographic techniques in achieving this vision. In particular, we will work on 3 packages with focuses on 1. Compatible modular frameworks that enable efficient instantiations; 2. Practical tight security that assures the same degree of security regardless of the application size in an efficient manner; 3. Quantum-resistant cryptography against future security threats. We believe that now is the exactly right time for this endeavor. Firstly, our digital applications can only become larger and larger. Secondly, several necessary basic theoretical tools have been only developed recently. Some of them are developed by the project manager. The project budgets 1 PhD and 1 postdoc.
