KVAL: Dental socket caps (SCaps) for alveolar bone regeneration.

Outcomes: Technology: Preliminary testing in large animal model indicated that SCap have several advantages over standard materials such as BIo-Oss, in the favor of handling, surgical application, healing and degradation. We can conclude that SCap possess high potential to allow dental surgeons to help more patients with clinical problems connected to alveolar ridge preservation and dental implant placement and rehabilitation. Quantitative analysis showed that SCap has slightly higher ridge length preservation than Bio-Oss, each compared to its control side and SCap preserved the ridge width much better than Bio-Oss, each compared to its control side. At the end of this project we concluded the following: 1. SCap proved its efficiency in bone regeneration in the clinically relevant large animal model. This is promising and have high success potential when shall be upgraded to human studies. 2. SCap showed significant advantage over currently used natural and sysntetic bone substitiutes, when compared in categories such as handling of the materials to form the scaffold, surgical application, healing and degradation. This indicates that SCap will be available as minimally invasive, short surgery time, efficient and easily customized solution compared to all the other currently available techniques. We beileve that SCaps is both patient and surgeon friendly solution. Business development: The project resulted in preliminary IP and exit startegy as well as estimates of the value of the technology based on available market data. The analysis indicates that the technology has immense commercial potential and could contribute to regioanl and national economy. Tha major factors allowing us predict high earning potential of SCap is increased number of dental implant prodecures which require dental ridge reconstruction and promissing technical results from this Qialification grant.
