BEDREHELSE-Bedre helse og livskvalitet

Addressing AMR in Tanzania using a “One Health” approach.

Tildelt: kr 0,18 mill.

This pre-project is aiming at building a robust consortium focusing on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in one low and middle-income country, Tanzania, with a clear need for research and capacity building in this area. We aim at writing a full proposal for a Collaborative and Knowledge-building Project in 2022 within AMR from a One Health perspective. The consortium partners cover the One Health areas, animal, human and environmental health, food production, with expertise from the natural and social sciences. There is an urgent need to establish a sustainable surveillance program of antimicrobial resistance and despite being mentioned in the Tanzania National Antimicrobial Resistance Action Plan, this has so far not been implemented. This is mainly because of a lack of capacity and financial resources. We will use a systemic approach to identify food chains where surveillance can be performed with limited resource requirements, to facilitate sustainability of the surveillance system also after the main project is finalized. We will organize a digital workshop with invited potential consortium partners and relevant stakeholders from Tanzania. The objective is dual. First, to obtain relevant input on priority areas and feasible approaches to cope with AMR in Tanzania from a One Health perspective. Second, to identify the most suitable food chains for AMR surveillance. This will aid in the formulation of the most important research questions and hypotheses for the full application. In addition, the consultative workshop will help identify relevant and engaged stakeholders and cement partnerships to be utilized in the full application and project. The consortium including relevant new partners will jointly prepare the full application under the coordination of the Norwegian Veterinary Institute. Zoom meetings with the consortium will be organized weekly to secure an active and integrative writing process and to discuss possible problems that might arise.
