Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the marine-human interface: A One Health approach

Tildelt: kr 43 999

The overall aim of the AMR-Aqua project is to elucidate the complex dynamics of AMR in and between human, animal and the environmental interfaces of the aquaculture setting of the two most predominant suppliers of farmed salmon in the world, and to design and demonstrate a strategy for environmental monitoring and mitigation of AMR. The project would study how aquaculture contributes to the development and spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria in marine ecosystems, its eventual transfer to animals and humans, and to inform and enable measures that ultimately protects human health and provide safe water resources for both humans and wildlife. The created knowledge and its impact will reach well beyond the European setting. We will provide means to guide action both at the source (approval), and in other parts of the water cycle. This project will pave the road for better risk assessments requested by relevant authorities and other national and international stakeholders. A basis for a new surveillance program of AMR in the environment will be provided, as well as development of innovations for mitigating antibiotic use in aquaculture. Framework for environmental AMR surveillance will facilitate possible future inclusion in regulatory systems in Europe and elsewhere. The project would provide 1) more efficient and targeted interventions, 2) early diagnostics of pathogens and associated AMR 3) reduced exposure to AMR through the environment, and 4) more sustainable management of aquaculture with respect to AMR and antibiotic use. Additionally, the project will demonstrate the benefits of One Health approach.
