STUDY OF METALS IN ARCTIC MARINE SEDIMENTS (MArS) RiS ID: 11837

Tildelt: kr 28 694

The glacial fjord Kongsfjorden (Spitsbergen, Svalbard Islands) is particularly suitable for studying the effects of the global anthropogenic activity on the Arctic ecosystem. In particular, the town of Ny-Ålesund is one of the world’s northernmost human settlements. The aim of the project is to study the content and spatial distribution of PTEs in marine sediments since trace elements can be used as tracers of different environmental sources. In fact several problematic sites (the old landfill and dumpsites in Thiisbukta, the fuel storage in the settlement, the closed mining areas, the airport and possibly the sewage outlet) must be closely studied to fill the gap in the background contamination of historical industrial sites, to prevent any dispersions of pollutants trapped in permafrost following global warming, and to plan appropriate bioremediation programmes of the contaminated sites. The final report will give a more complete scenario on the distribution and source apportionment of some potentially toxic elements in relation to the human activities in the surrounding coastal area of Ny-Ålesund
