Sedimentary facies analysis and architecture of alluvial fan systems within a rift basin, Billefjorden Trough, Svalbard, RiS ID 11611

Tildelt: kr 35 524

The two main targets of the fieldwork are outcrops exposing alluvial fan deposits at the slopes of the Svenbrehøgda and the Mumien mountains. The focus will be given to a detailed structural and stratigraphical description and acquisition of 3D photogrammetry. The dataset collected in the field will include sedimentary logs, geological sketches, measurements of the orientation of bedding, and records of paleo-transport indicators from two different alluvial fan bodies. Moreover, drone-based photogrammetry will allow for the creation of digital outcrop models, which will be used for mapping lateral extensions of facies bodies. The different alluvial fan systems will be compared in terms of the sizes, depositional styles, and their position within the Billefjorden Through.
