The proposed project aims to develop a new approach to the study of automation that challenges dominant conceptions in the philosophy of technology by recognizing the essential role played by human operators. Building on previously published work by the ER on the relation between automation and skill, this project will combine historical research with philosophical analysis to reveal how ideals of autonomous technologies are sustained through the erasure of the skillful activity upon which they depend. In developing this approach, the project will produce research which (a) identifies the different forms of human agency upon which automating technologies depend, (b) explores the processes by which they come to be hidden from view and finally (c) examines ethical concerns associated with their erasure. The resulting study will outline a new way of understanding automation as a social process that is intended to be useful not only to philosophers, historians and sociologists studying automation but also designers and members of the general public interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the social and ethical challenges facing automation today.
The central challenges facing this project are associated with its primary objective of developing an original approach to the study of automation. As with any attempt at outlining a new theory, this carries a number of risks, such as (1) failure to find enough evidence to support the central claim or (2) challenges linked to finding acceptance for the new approach.
