Eye tracking technology: A training workshop on methods for psychological and educational research

Tildelt: kr 96 102

Eye tracking is an increasingly popular and accessible technology, thanks to major improvements in usability of devices and software. Eye tracking offers unparalleled access to the online workings of the mind during tasks such as reading and math problem solving and for this reason it has attracted the attention of researchers across the world. However, it still requires special training and experience to produce reliable and informative results. There is currently a lot of interest around the potential of this technology but few opportunities for training in the Nordic region. Aiming to address this demand, increase our own research efficiency, and contribute to the formation of a research network, we plan to organize a training workshop on the collection, analysis, and sharing of eye tracking data to increase research productivity and efficiency in psychological and educational research. In particular, we have invited a group of high-profile international experts to provide lectures and hands-on sessions on eye tracking technology and its applications during one week in May 2022. Day 1 will be devoted to an introduction to eye tracking. Days 2-4 will present advanced eye tracking topics with special relevance for psychological and educational research (e.g., working with children, addressing data processing challenges, multivariate statistical analyses, the pupillary response, eye movements in reading and math problem solving), covering both methods and concrete research examples. Lecture sessions will be interspersed with hands-on opportunities at the department's eye tracking lab to further familiarize participants with the technology. Day 5 will be devoted to small-scale group "mini-study" projects for the participants to gain sufficient experience to be able to move independently from that point forward. We aim to attract 25 attendees from the Nordic region and nearby Northern European countries with increasing interest for the technology.
