NECS-2023: Care

Tildelt: kr 99 999

The Screen Cultures programme, based at the Department of Media and Communications (IMK), at the University of Oslo requests support from the IKTpluss programme for the hosting of the NECS annual conference 2023. Screen Cultures is one of the prioritised research and teaching initiatives at the Faculty of Humanities, UiO. It has been approached by the European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (NECS) to host its annual conference in 2023. The NECS conference is one of the largest and most prestigious international Screen and Media Studies events. Although it was originally founded as a cinema conference, across its nearly 20-year history NECS has broadened its scholarly scope significantly to embrace all forms of media studies research, including digital technologies research, research on creative media practises, archival research, software programming and artificial intelligence. The NECS annual conference is one of the central meeting places for media studies scholars and media practicioners from within and beyond Europe. It has been attracting over 500 participants in recent years, who present their current works, forge new collaborations, and update the field of media studies over a 4-day period. Conference dates are fixed, with each iteration taking place on the Thursday/Friday/Saturday in the third week of June; the preceding Wednesday is reserved for the graduate symposium. With our choice of “Care” as conference theme, and with a shortlist of keynote speakers that entails Sianne Ngai and Jose van Dijck (pending confirmation), this event acknowledges that, due to swift advances in digital technologies, media reach ever further into and intervene in our intimate, familial and professional relationships of caring and being cared for. In this way, the theme speaks resoundingly to the thematic areas of “enabling technologies” of the IKTpluss programme.
